There are a lot of terrifying Pokemon. Most of the Dark Pokemon are based on ideas like 'what if a dog was also a goth', then there are the fire-breathing dragons, huge metallic demons, and massive poisonous beasts. There are Pokemon that can warp your mind, haunt your dreams, and electrocute you in seconds. While many of the most popular Pokemon have a cute and cuddly wholesome aesthetic, reading the Pokedex or exploring off the beaten track will reveal that several Pokemon have much darker cores. None more so than Gorebyss, the most terrifying Pokemon there is.

If you were to rank the Pokemon by how well known they are, Gorebyss would be the bottom tier. It's an extremely obscure Pokemon, owing to its rarity and lack of any notable presence throughout Pokemon's history. In the games, you catch Gorebyss by trading a Gorebyss holding a Deep Sea Scale, and you can only catch Clamperl by either exploring underwater in games that allow it, or by fishing. I have a few Water Pokemon I like using, and the extra fuss for no real payoff means I have never with bothered catching it.

It is probably most famous for 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Pokemon Go, where it was the star of the Water Festival. On that day, several rare Pokemon spawned and Clamperl was your reward for every research task, with a high chance of being shiny. In Go, Clamperl's evolution was random, so you needed to catch enough Clamperl to evolve it at least four times (two shiny and two regular), and then hope that the odds were in your favour to give you shiny and non-shiny Gorebyss, and shiny and non-shiny Huntail.

Gorebyss in the Pokemon anime

It was at this Water Festival that I first took notice of Gorebyss. I was aware of its existence, but had never bothered to catch it, and therefore had never really read up on it. But Gorebyss is fucking terrifying. It's sneaky too. Let's look at some harmless Pokedex entries, starting with Ruby: 'Gorebyss lives in the southern seas at extreme depths. Its body is built to withstand the enormous pressure of water at incredible depths. Because of this, this Pokémon's body is unharmed by ordinary attacks.' Basically, it's a deep sea fish.

FireRed, LeafGreen, HeartGold, SoulSilver, X, Y, Black, Black 2, White, White 2, Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon all bury the lede too, with versions of this: 'Its pink body becomes more vivid with the rise of water temperatures in the springtime.' Basically, it's a deep sea fish that's pink. Why is this little sea worm with a Little Mermaid-style clamshell bra so unsettling? Let's ask Pokemon Sapphire. 'Although Gorebyss is the very picture of elegance and beauty while swimming, it is also cruel. When it spots prey, this Pokémon inserts its thin mouth into the prey's body and drains the prey of its body fluids.' Basically, it's not just a fish.

Animals eat other animals and 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:we eat h🎃am sandwiches that might be Lechonk. It's the way of the world. I have no issue with the idea of a food chain. But Gorebyss does not just eat to live. It's 'cruel', and specifically drains your bodily fluids out before leaving you to wither as a husk. This is a Pokemon that takes your essence, it sucks away your life force for sport and then swims away, elegant pink body growing more vivid in the springtime.

The creatures of the deep always seem like the scariest because they seem so desperately unknowable. It's a whole other world down there that humans will never have dominion over. Gorebyss preys on those fears, exsanguinating all that is good from us with its sharp, needle-like mouth. Other Pokemon may look scarier, but no Pokemon is more terrifying than little Gorebyss.
