Thursday was the day of the PS5 reveal, and with it came the announcement of several big, high-profile games for the PS5. And yet, to open the presentation, the bizarre choice was made to show footage from a port/remaster of Grand Theft Auto V on PS5.
This borders on cruelty. Many have been expecting the announcement of Grand Theft Auto 6 for quite some time now. As such, using Grand Theft Auto V as a way to open an event that's about ushering in a new generation was a poor way to go. The game, while great in its own rightও and one of the best of this (and last) generation, is a teensy bit old at this point.
Further, if you're going to highlight PS4 games coming to the PS5, Grand Theft Auto V was likely the wrong choice there. Among the PS4 games shown were 2018's God of War, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Ratchet & Clank (2016), and more. If these first-party games are coming to PS5, why not show them instead of Grand Theft Auto V?
The show, overall, has received very mixed reactions. From the announcement of a new Spider-Man game to the new Ratchet & Clank to another Horizon entry, the presentation can't be criticized for lacking in content. However, Rockstar fans can only go off of Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption II, and their re🏅spective online components for so long before they start to take these types of things as an in🥃sult.
So, when is the next time we'll hear about more from Rockstar? It was mentioned in the presentation that Sony looks forward to continuing its relationship with Rockstar, so hopefully, we won't have to wait too much longer given that the next-gen consoles are just months away at this point. Moreover, it has been indicated that a new Grand Theft Auto is being worked on, albeit in a new format involving batches of content released over time. Tthe question is no longer one of "if." Rather, it appears that the cl🃏ock is ticking until we feast our eyes on the next Rockstar project.
Still, while Grand Theft Auto is great and all, unless it has a "6" or "VI" attached to the title, let's keep it out of presenta🧜tions.
