Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is a fun-filled, butt-kicking action-adventure game that sees you step into the jet boots of Star-Lord as he leads his fellow Guardians in a brand new story. You'll be exploring exciting new places, meeting new characters, and making plenty of decisions.
There are a lot of things to learn when it comes to the game, so we've covered our top beginner tips for you right here to help you get started.
Not All Of Your Decisions Matter
Almost immediately you'll be thrown into your first decision, should you reassure Groot or spook him? Truth is, it doesn't matter. In fact, a lot of decisions don't matter. Most of the conversation options you make, especially those where you are running around and just responding to what your companions are saying, largely don't matter.
Additionally, not making a decision can be a decision in itself — refusing to pick either option and letting the time run out instead is just as much of a choice as any other option, though doing this doesn't often have the best result.
There Are Secret Areas To Explore
Don't just shoot for the objective in each chapter — exploring has its own benefits. Not only can you find secret areas with collectibles, outfits, or archives to discover, but some of the funniest moments in the game come from the additional dialogue you hear by straying off the beaten path.
Your companions wiꦬll often ridicule you for exploring the area rather than following them, and sometimes you will encounter special conversations and cutscenes by venturing into different spaces. Take your time and enjoy the game.
Finding Collectibles Unlocks New Conversations
There are hidden collectibles throughout the chapters and each time you find one, it will appear somewhere aboard the Milano, often in the room of the Guardian that the collectible is related to. For example, you can find the Assassin's Ring collectible in Gamora's room once you've found it.
Interacting with the collectibles will prompt a special conversation with one of your teammates whereꦅ you can learn a little more about them and yourself.
Chapter Select Is Always Locked Into Your Previous Choice
Each time you complete a chapter, you can choose to replay it from the Chapter Select menu. This is great for players who want to check out what would have happened if they went with another choice... to an extent. If the consequence of the decision is within the same chapter, you'll be able to see the outcome. However, decisions where you don't see the consequence until a later chapter will always be locked into your original decision.
Guardians of the Galaxy does have three save files, so you can always boot up a new game and play through to experience other decision routes. Just be aware, this new save file will ⛦overwrite the state of your Chapter Select, as Chapter Select always uses your most recent decisions.
Other Marvel Characters Make Cameo Appearances
It's no surprise that other Marvel characters make appearances throughout the game, but surprisingly, even some of the smallest roles could be someone from the wider Marvel universe. For example, that prisoner you meet for a fleeting moment? That's Jack Flag, also known as Jack Harrison.
Marvel enthusiasts are likely to notice these cameos and any of the many Marvel easter eggs and references, but for the more c✨asual fans, these little moments can often pass you by unnoticed.
Collect Components
Scattered throughout the chapters are Basic Components and Advanced Components. While it might seem like there is an overabundance of these, you should collect as many as you can as they are used to unlock new perks at Work Benches.
The sooner you collect these an🦂d unlock the perks, the easier the game will be as perks can be super useful both in battle and out of bat🉐tle, such as increasing your health or helping you to find nearby items.
Chapter Gameplay Varies Depending On Your Decisions
When you first start playing, it can easily feel like your decisions don't really matter one way or another. However, your choices can really affect what happens in certain circumstances. The first real example of this is in Chapter Four. The gameplay of this chapter changes a lot depending on the choice you made in the previous chapter.
This chapter can either be more stealth or more battle-orientated based on your choice, so make sure you chose wisely. This is also one of the reasons why the game has great replay value, it's just a shame the Chapter Select doesn't easily facilitate this.
Ability Points Are Shared Between All Guardians
As you earn XP, you'll earn Ability Points that you can use to purchase new abilities for the Guardians. However, unlike most games where each character has their own number of Ability Points, Guardians of the Galaxy shares them between the whole team.
That means you have to decide who gets an ability upgrade and who doesn't. Don't put all your eggs in one basket, so don't just upgrade Star-Lord and make sure you give the others some new abilities too.
