Asura - Plucky & Scientific
Asura are a short people with large eyes and ears. These traits developed due to years of living underground. However, they were forced to move out to the surface when an evil entity, The Great Destroyer, discovered the massive network of portals they developed and used it to send enemies through. Their ancient cities are buried underground, never to be see💝n again.
To survive as small creatures in a big world, Asura have become masters of technology. Their culture and social hierarchy are shaped by intellectual pursuits and efforts to prove their own superiority as an expert in whatever niche field of study they've chosen.
Though Asura don't believe in a particular God, they do believe in a permeating force which they call the Eternal Alchemy. This theory of the Eternal Alchemy suggests that everything in the world, all magic, all people, are part of a larger machine. If they🔜 can understand that machine, Asura believe, they can gain mastery over the entire w💦orld.
Biography Questions
The first set of questions asks you to decide which Asuran College they are a part of. Colleges are places of education as well as study - students stay with the college to form a "krewe" (group) of Asurans and pursue their research. As far as lore goes, each College represents a unique approach to knowledge. On the gameplay side, your choice will determine which experiment you've been working on most recently (and affects the level 10-20 story quests).
The second set of racial questions is about the first invention you ever put together. This will determine the story quests between level 20 and level 30; you'll need to deal with that invention going out of control.
Finally, the last question is about who your mentor was. Other than character/personality-b🌼uilding, this choice has very li𒁏ttle impact. The only effect that it has is that this mentor will appear in your home instance.
Racial Skills
- Pain Inverter - "Apply confusion to nearby foes. You gain resolution."
- Radiation Field - "Create a Radiation Field at target location, inflicting poison and weakness on foes."
- Technobabble - "Daze target foe."
- Summon 7-Series Golem - "Summon a 7-Series attacking golem to fight for you."
- Summon D-Series Golem - "Summon a D-Series defensive golem."
- Summon Power Suit - "Summon a Power Suit which you or your allies can enter and use to combat foes."
Charr
Charr are a militaristic race with a long and complicat🅰ed history with Humans. Long ago, Charr were a powerful empire set to conquer much of Tyria.
Their progress was halted when humanity stood against them. Charr blamed the human gods for humanity's success and, many years later, have sworn off gods altogether. They strive to make their own way. Humans and Charr are at peace, now, but there's much tension between the races.
Charr's long history of war means that even their everyday society is organized like a military. The Charr are all organized into three "Legions" - groups of Charr each run by its own leader with different ideas on how to approach conflict - and within those Legions are "Warbands" - s🦄maller groups that Charr join at a very young age and which perform tasks together.
Warbands are considered more important in the raising of a child than the child's parents. Any non-military task, like agriculture, is usually left to Charr who are young, old, disabled, etc.
Biography Questions
Of the three racial questions, we'll tackle the second question first due to its importance. It asks you to name your "sparring partner" from your Warband and your answer determines who will accompany you on story missions. To make life easier for yourself, choose a partner who you feel will complement the Class you've chosen.
The Charr Personal Story between levels 10 and 20 is basically about taking down the radicals known as the Flame Legion. Your first choice determines your Warband and, subsequently, how you'll go about dealing with the Flame Legion.
The last choice is about the person who sired you (your father), and what he was like. In quests between level 20 and 30, you'll have to deal with his legacy - so choose wisely.
Racial Skills
- Battle Roar - "Let out a battle roar, giving might and fury to nearby allies."
- Hidden Pistol - "Shoot target foe with a hidden pistol while evading backward."
- Shrapnel Mine - "Throw a shrapnel mine that bleeds and cripples foes."
- Artillery Barrage - "Call down an artillery barrage at target location, damaging foes."
- Charrzooka - "Pull out a powerful charrzooka that shoots rockets."
- Warband Support - "Call in members of your warband to assist you."
Human
Once upon a time, Humans dominated Tyria. Their kingdoms stretched over much of the known world. However, in recent years, they have been beaten back - by Charr, Elder Dragons, and other circumstanc♌es - to occupy only one region, known as Kryta.
Many humans associate their recent bad luck with the disappearance of their gods. Long ago, the six human gods were said to have brought humans t⛄o Tyriꦦa, to have aided them in surviving in this new place, and to have talked with them regularly and even intervened in events. For the past 200 years or so, though, the gods have been eerily silent.
Human culture is the most diverse out of the races - it depends heavily on which humans you're interacting with. Descendents from certain past kingdoms of humanity tend to have a shared bond, for example. However, there are some things that are constant among most humans. First, humans have the greatest social inequity seen among any race - there are defined lower, middle, and upper 🅘classes.
Second, they are often considered a stubborn, conservative, traditional people - members of other races speculate🔜 about when they might die out. Third, all humans take special respect in honouring their dead.
Biography Questions
The first racial biography question is about your financial situation. It affects who your childhood friend is - Petra, Faren, or Quinn (as detailed in the descriꦉptions) - and the setting of the quests between level 10 and level 20.
The second question asks you to name a regret and the quests from level 20 to level 30 will allow you to make up for your pas🌸t failure.
The final question about which god you worship is just like the mentor ques𝓡tion for Asura: the only impact is has is to choose which priest appears in your Home Instance.
Racial Skills
- Prayer to Dwayna - "Beseech Dwayna to restore your health."
- Prayer to Kormir - "Beseech Kormir to remove 3 conditions from you."
- Prayer to Lyssa - "Pray to Lyssa, granting a random boon to yourself and a random condition to target foe."
- Avatar of Melandru - "Transform into an Avatar of Melandru."
- Hounds of Balthazar - "Summon two Hounds of Balthazar to fight at your side."
- Reaper of Grenth - "Become a Reaper of Grenth, chilling and poisoning nearby foes."
Norn
Physically, the Norn look much like humans do - except that they average 9 feet tall and are incredibly muscular. Though there are various body sizes and heights among the Norn, most follow these conventions due to the harsh environment they live in - the Shiverpeak Mountains. All norn are also capable of shapeshifting between their human form and a Spirit Form. A particular norn's Spirit Form will depend on which Spirit of the Wild they follow.
The Norn religion centres around the spirits of animals. It is thought t🌠hat all the animals of the same species share a spirit that personifies their characteristics.
Four, in particular, are highly revered by the Norn, due to ancient history detailing how these four spirits led them out of the far south of Tyria: Bear (associated with strength of the body and mind, ferocity, confidence), Snow Leopard (associated with stealth, hunting, independence, strategy), Raven (associated with wisdom, cleverness, clarity, trickery), and Wolf⭕ (associated with loyalty, family, strength in numbers).
Culturally, Norn are honour-conscious and family-oriented. They tell grand tales of their ancestors around campfires, aim to create a breathtaking🌊 legacy for themselves one day, and do not trus🎃t lightly. Their society places particular emphasis on physical strength, so friendly brawls or hunting contests are common.
This also means that many practical skills (hunting, tracking, fighting) are taught young and mastered over a Norn's life.
Biography Questions
Your first question determines the level 10 to level 20 quests - you'll get a chance to actually use your most important quality.
Next, during the quests from level 20 to 30, you must set right your past mistake and face the pe꧒ople affected - as determined by the second question.
As with two of the other races, the last question about which Spirit of the Wild spoke to you is purely cosmetic: a statue of that animal appears in your Home Instance.
Racial Skills
- Call Owl - "Call upon an owl to attack and bleed your foe."
- Call Wurm - "Summon a wurm to fight for you."
- Become the Bear - "Shape-shift into norn bear form."
- Become the Raven - "Shape-shift into norn raven form."
- Become the Snow Leopard - "Shape-shift into norn snow leopard form."
- Become the Wolf - "Shape-shift into norn wolf form."
Sylvari
The Sylvari are the youngest playable race - indeed, the youngest race in Tyria. At the start of Guild Wars 2, the oldest Sylvari is only 25 years old (and no one even knows if they can die of old age). Unlike most races, Sylvari don't have parents and family trees - there's only one tree: The Pale Tree.
This huge, literal tree stands in the south of Tyria and gives birth to all Sylvari via pods hanging from her branches. Sylvari are not capable of giving birth to their own children. However, they don't consider themselves to be brothers and sisters - more like distant cousins, at best.
The morals and ethics of Sylvari are generally straightforward. They are based on the Pale Tree's personality; she was raised by peace-loving men; a human named Ronan and a centaur named Ventari. Before his death, Ventari wrote down on a tablet the teachings he wished to pass on to the Pale Tree. This tablet is beloved by Sylvari almost spiritually - but, other than this, 𝄹they have no religion.
As plants, Sylvari are in tune with the environment around them. They can sense the feelings of plants and (occasionally) animals. This even extends to each other - Sylvari share a loose kind of hive mind, through which the Pale Tree can experience their lives and which they can sense one another's emotions. Some Sylvari are born more or less attuned to this hive mind than others.
Biography Questions
The first question asks what kind of quest you're called to - just like it sounds, your first quests from level 10 to 20 will ask you to hunt down the thing you choose.
The second question is about which of Ventari's teachings you subscribe to. The quests between level 20 and level ꦦ30 will test🃏 your faith in that teaching.
The last question is mostly cosmetic (a Firstborn born in the same cycle as you will appear in your home instance) but unlike some of the other races' "purely cosmetic" questions, this answer can also change the dialogue you have with certain NPCs. It's not a significant difference, but a nice thing to include!
