In celebration of the enduring popularity of Guilty Gear throughout the years, let's take a look at the game's past in the pinnacle of competition. Here are some of the series' greatest ever moments at the showpiece Las Vegas event.

7 Machabo Halts Omito — Evo 2016, Guilty Ge🌺ar Xrd Revelator

Sin Looks Unimpressed In Cathedral

Machabo and Omito were seemingly destinedဣ to face each other in Guilty Gear Xrd. These two would meet𒆙 three times in Evo brackets over the years, and two of those were in Grand Finals. The first of these collisions was in 2015.

In most years, Omito would have been the odds on favorite. He's considered one of Japan's greatest players, and he played one of the game's strongest characters in Revelator Johnny. After 2016, Omito would go on to win two Evo tournaments, but before he could, he had to know defeat — and it was in 2016 when Machabo's Sin introduced him to it.

6 Xyzzy Perseveres — Evo 2021 Asia, Guil🌜ty Gear Strive

I-No Shoots Chemical Love At Axl

Of all the Evo online tournaments during the 2021 series, none were more stacked than the Asia bracket🌸. For the time, it also featured one of the most eccentric sets of characters — there was odds-on-favorite Daru and his I-No, and Xyzzy, who had to fight out of the losers bracket with (at the time) low-tier Axl.

Coming in from the losers bracket means you have to win two sets in order to win the Grand Finals. To do so against the legendary Daru — and with a defensive, low health character like Axl against the rushdown monster I-No — was a tall order. Xyzzy, against all odds, pulled off the last minute comeback, almost exclusively thanks to the fact that he kept his composure and capitalized heavily on Daru's impatience.

5 LostSoul's Defiant Run — Evo 2018, Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2

Elphelt Stands In Glowing Light

An American has never won an Evo World event in any sing👍les Guilty G🐼ear event. But in 2018, LostSoul came painfully close — and the path he took was far from an easy one.

In his way was Nage, a legendary Japanese Faust player and the winner of Evo Japan 2018. LostSoul had the weight of not only his own expectations, but of precedent on his shoulders. His defeat of Nage to make top three was a revelation to the rest of the world, that the US could produce players capable of defeating Japan's best and make it into the money positions.

4 🦄 Latif Be🧜comes First Middle East Champion — Evo 2009, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus

Zato Disintigrates In The Void

Saudi Arabian player Abdullatif "Latif" Alhmili has become an internationally renowned player and🍸 internet pe♚rsonality within the FGC. While he is probably best known for his C. Viper in Street Fighter 4 and Guilty Gear Strive, his first big claim to fame came in the form of a breakthrough Evo victory way back in 2009.

Latif piloted his exceptional Zato with ease through the Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus bracket, defeating Marn Phan in Grand Finals. In the process, he made history — as his victory was the first time aꦛ 🐻Middle East-representing player had won an Evo championship, in any game.

3 Hotashi Defeats SonicFox —𓆏 Evo 2021 Online NA, Guilty🍷 Gear Strive

Nagoryuki Hits A Massive Counterhit

Though Hotashi made his way into Grand Finals on the winners side, the (at the time) unsponsored Guilty Gear player was, nonetheless, something of an underdog. His opponent was SonicFox, one of the world's all-time greatest fighting game professionals, and a multiple Evo champion across several games.

SonicFox was on an impressive winning streak through the loser's bracket, having defeated Guilty Gear pros DEB and TempestNYC to make it to Grand Finals against Hotashi. In a narrowly contested set, though, Hotashi defeated SonicFox — not only winning his first Evo, but carving a path that would eventually lead to sponsorship with Moist Esports.

2 Nage vs. Omito — Evo Japan𝔉 2018 Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2

Johnny Tosses Faust Up In The Air

"When you watch them fight," broadcaster Majin Obama's shaky voice , "don't look away."

In 2018, Faust specialist Nage and Johnny innovator Omito represented two of the pillars of Japan's arcade scene. To see these two meet each other in the Grand Finals at Evo Japan was more than just two great players facing each other. It was the legacy of a community — and the history of a player who had never defeated his arch-rival when it mattered most — on full display for the world to see. For 25 grueling minutes, these two legends battled across two nail-biting sets, and represented the best of what Guilty Gear — and the FGC at large — had to offer.

1 Woshige Celebrates Too Early — Evo 2🍎015, Guilty Gear Xrd Sign

Milia Stands Defiant In Eddie's Presence

Woshige's loss to legendary Guilty Gear player Ogawa is Guilty Gear's best known moment for all the wrong reasons — especially if you're Woshige. The winners' semifinals set was tied at one apiece, and Woshige found himself on the ropes. He lost the first round of the last game, and was poised to lose the second. Careful meter use and playing around burst, however, allowed Woshige to make a heroic comeback against the Zato expert.

But a hero's story was not meant to be, for Woshige miscounted the rounds. Believeing himself the victor, he stood up in celebration. "What are you standing up for?!" called Ryan Hunter from the commentary booth. By the time Woshige made it back to the sticks, it was too late — Ogawa obliterated Woshige's Milia instantly. This unforced error became a viral sensation, appearing on every corner of the internet and even making its way into . To rub salt into the wound, Ogawa went on to win the tournament — although Woshige did recover to finish third.
