Halls of Torment does not hold your hand when you're learning the basics. With enemies coming at you in every direction, no clear objective, and a mysterious timer ticking down, it's easy to end up dead in seconds. It'll take you multiple runs before finally understanding what's going on and how to become stronger.
Halls of Torment features a wide variety of customization options for characters through abilities and traits. While it's amazing to have so much to experiment with, it can be overwhelming for someone just getting started. Here we have a handful of tips for beginners looking to understand basic gameplay functions and ways to permanently strengthen your character.
Don't Stop Moving
Staying still for too long is a surefire way to meet an early demise. Enemies constantly spawn from all corners of the map, making it easy to become boxed in by enemies. Always search for cr𒁃acks in the enemy formation to escape 🦋with as little damage as possible.
Faster enemie☂s will 🌞spawn the longer you spend on any level.
Boosting your movement speed is a requirement to have any chance of surviving against stronger enemies. Circling around enemies in large circles is also an effective tool for evasion. Since most enemies run straight toward you, running around in big circles keeps enemies in a loop.
Watch The Timer
The timer indicates how much time is left until the boss of the level appears. Defeating the boss results in a congratulations screen and a successful escape from the Halls of Torment. Bosses are extremely tough to defeat on your first few runs. Taking down a boss will get much easier after you gain access to equipment and blessings.
Enemies will also grow stronger the less time is left. Use this information to decide on when to focus on leveling up, hunting down ability scrolls,🍬 or replenishing any health you may have lost. Always strive to live for as long as possible, as you may end up completing a quest and be rewarded gold for it.
Go For Scrolls Of Mastery Early
A Scroll of Mastery is an item that spawns in upon entering any of the game's levels. Only one spawns in the Haunted Caverns, but two spawn in the Ember Ground and Forgotten Viaduct. Scrolls of Mastery grant you powerful abilities to wipe out enemies.
Obtaining a scroll early is vital to getting a strong start and leveling up your🔴 chosen ability faster, while it takes minimal experience to level up.
It's best to experiment with the variety of abilities and see what works best for your class and play style.
The Lightning Strike ability is devastating and should be chosen anytime it's available.
Many abilities rely on your aim or positioning to deal damage. However, Lightning Strike will always hit enemies nearby automatically. Upgrading this ability's attack speed results in thunderbolts constantly being hurled at the battlefield.
Destroy Boxes And Barrels
Boxes and barrels contain a variety of items for you to take advantage of. Health restoratives, gold, and hands can be found inside destructible objects. These objects also contain power-ups that can boost your attack power or make you invincible. The Gold obtained on runs can be used to pu🏅rchase 𒊎blessings and armor at the campsite.
Hands should be saved until later in your runs. In addition to being found inside boxes and barrels, one hand will spawn at the start of every level. Hands will pick up any loose experience points that you didn't pick up.
Waiting until later in the run to pick up the hand allows for experience points to accumulate. Picking up a hand after stockpiling experience points will allow you t🌼o level up rapidly and efficiently.
Focus On Elite Enemies
As time winds down in any level, elite enemies may spawn. An elite enemy is a much larger enemy with a red health bar underneath, and typically have unique attack patterns that require all your attention to survive. More elite enemies will continue to spawn as the timer depletes. Taking down elite enemies as they appear is key to avoid being swarmed.
Elite enemies also drop a Scroll of Mastery or equipment upon being defeated. Prior to obtaining the Wellkeeper's shop, defeating elite enemies is the only way to get equipment on a run.
Buy Blessings
After your first run, the Shrine of Blessings will appear at the campsite. The Shrine of Blessings offers blessings for purchase. Blessings are permanent upgrades to your character. The more you upgrade, the pricier blessings will become. Prioritizing go✤ld in your runs can be an effective way to improve your stats over🥃all.
Completing specific quests can also unlock⛦ even mo🐭re blessings for purchase.
One of the best blessings to unlock allows you to be revived in a run.
Complete Quests
Completing quests is vital to unlocking characters, blessings, and levels. Quests are divided up into several categories dependent on levels, cꦆlasses, and milestones.
- Character-specific quests require you to play as the specified character to reap the rewards.
- Level-specific quests function the same way, requiring you to play a specific level.
- Milestone quests can be completed with any character on any level, but they take a while to complete and should be achieved naturally rather than being made a priority.
Every run, you should aim to complete at least one quest since many quests can only be completed in one go. The gold accumulated 🔯from these quests should also be more than enough to purchase the blessings and equipment necessary to survive some of the more grueling bosses.
Save The Wellkeeper
Upon entering the Ember Ground for the first time, you'll see a cage icon on your screen and hear someone calling for help. Headingꦫ over the cage♛ will be the Wellkeeper, who will ask you to find the key to release him.
The key will only be a few feet away, grab it and return to the cage. The Wellkeeper wil🐈l then return to the campsite🎉 after being freed.
From now on, wells can be found in every level. You can use wells to retrieve any equipment you come across on your run. This equipment can then be bought from the Wellkeeper and used for all future runs. You can only retrieve one piece of equipment per run, so make sure the equipment you retrieve is your most valua🐽ble.
