Halo: Combat Evolved sparke𒉰d a massively popular franchise that introduced✨ gamers to a complex and highly detailed world that would be explored in various mediums. While Bungie focused on the canon of the video games and largely ignored the books the other company involved with Halo’s expansion, 343 Industries, made the books mandatory for understanding the story.
For fans who have only ever played the games, this has introduced a number of plot holes or confusing develo💦pments that are only explored in the books.
10 Ur-Didact Origins ꧑
In Halo 4 players 📖find themselves coming face to face with a powerful villain called Didact who is hellbent on destroying humans with his army🅰 of Promethean Knights. While the game did explore the secrets behind the Prometheans, it never really explained who Ur-Didact was or where he came from.
In the forerunner trilogy of books starting with Halo: Cryptum written by Greg Bear it’s explained Ur-Didact was a commander of the Forerunner military who opposed the creation of Halos. His racism agai𓄧nst♔ humans and Promethean experiments were what led to the betrayal by his wife the Librarian and subsequent imprisonment.

This hostility is explained in the Kilo-Five trilogy of books written by Karen Traviss. The series deals with the events between Halo 3 and Halo 4 that explains 𒆙a group of separatists led by Jul M’dama opposed the truce and a new fac🎉tion calling itself the Covenant arose to begin the search for the Didact.
7 ♉Jul M’dama Origins
Jul M’Dama is the secondary antagonist in Halo 4 intent on releasing Didact and sparking another war with the humans. Throughout Halo 4 Jul M’dama proved a force to be reckoned with, though the game never explained the rꦕeasoning♏ behind his campaign.
Again the Kilo-Five trilogy by Karen Traviss explains the events prior. After the death of his wife during💛 the Covenant Civil War, Jul M’dama escaped to a distant planet under Covenant rule and rallied a large army of soldiers unaware of the civil war to launch a mission to recover Forerunner tech. It♓ was during his time on the shield world that he learns of the Didact’s existence and new goal.
6 The First Coven🍃ant War
The very first game in the series pitted futuristic humans against a technologically super༒ior race hellbent on their destruction. Though later games would give details and insight into the religious fervor of the Covenant and some clues to their desire for war, it’s never fully explained why they started the war in the first place.
The novel Halo: Contact Harvest written by Joseph Staten reveals that when the Covenant first encountered the humans they discovered that humans were descendants of the Forerunners. The dust became ❀corrupted causing the Forerunners to go insane and seek the creation of a lifeform capable of destroying the Precursors. 4 ꦬ Gravemind Origins
The Gravemind in Halo 2 was a disturbing entity that appeared out of nowhere and bewildered fans. It was understood that it somehow controlled the flood, but little else was revealed about th💛is monstrous character.

The book Halo: First Strike written by Eric Nylund reveals that Sergeant Johnson survived the Flood outbreak because of t🔜he Spartan-I experiments he underwent making him immune to infection. He used this immunity to secure a Pelican with other marines and escape the Halo.
1 How Master Chief Got To Eartꦿh
There was a considerable jump in time between Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2. One minute Master Chief is idling in space in a Pelican and the next he’s preparing Earth for an incoming invasion by the Covena💟nt with no explanation about how he got there.
The book Halo: First Strike also explains this gap. It’s revealed that after Master Chief met up with Sergeant Johnson and the other survivors they commandeer a Covenant ship and travel to Reach. There they find Dr. Halsey and surviving Spartans, secure the human ship UNSC Gettysburg, learn that the Coven🐠ant is heading for Earth, and high tail it back home to prepare for the invasion.
