Helldivers 2 Works Because It Wasn't Conceived As A Live-Service Game

Arrowhe💖ad’s squad shooter is a live service because tha෴t’s what allowed it to tell the best stories

On Tuesday, presented players with two options. The first of which was to head to Vernen Wells to save survivors trapped in Super Citizen Anne's Hospital for Very Sick Children. The second option was to liberate Marfark, which would grant access to the MD-17 Anti-Tank Mines strategem.

It turns out, there's some good in humanity left after all, as thousands of Helldivers worked to free the survivors. They did so knowing there was no in-game reward because in-game it was the right thing to do. Arrowhead Game Studios then followed up with a real-life donation to the Save the Children donation.

Arrowhead Makes Good On Players' Efforts

The donation amounted to $4,311, which was the number of in-game children that were saved by the operation. Save the Children was founded in 1919 by Eglantyne Jebb on the basis that children should "have the right to grow up healthy, educated and safe." Since its fꦗoun𝄹ding, Save the Children has changed the lives of over one billion children, . The organization works in over 100 hundred countries to achieve its mission.

In typical Helldivers fashion, the saved children shared a special message with players, complete with a sw𒆙eet drawing. Check it out:

Fortunately for the Helldivers, the work isn't over just yet. That's because Joel, the game master, revealed that if players can liberate Marfark before the timer runs out, then they'll get the mines after all. Of course, they don't think that will happen.

As it turns out, making the right decision not only feels good, but it can also lead to some incredible real-life benefits. Above all, positive karma comes around, and players have a chance to earn both rewards. Now we'll see if they can actually liberate Marfark. Good luck, Helldivers.
