The moment you think you’re in the clear, you walk over a hill and see dozens of robots or bugs marching towards you. You’re always low on amဣmo. You’re always dying or about to die. There’s no hope for you. And that’s why the game works so well: It’s fun to die. Helldivers 2 makes death unavoidable and - at times - dramatically hilarious.

Obviously, Helldivers 2 isn’t the first game to do this. Lots of games are fun to die in. There are thousands of videos of Grand Theft Auto 5 players exploding in new and interesting ways. At least half of them are set to the song “Bodies” by Drowning Pool. And Souls games build their entire reputation on a screen that says, “You Died.&rdquo🔴; Meeting your demise in games like Elden Ring is the primary way you figure out how to overcome bosses with depressing backstories. There’s excitement and pathos when you’re THIS CLOSE to destroying an all-powerful boss and come up short.

But it’s a little different in Helldivers 2. Dying is still informative. Dying is still dramatic. But it’s also part of the entire premise. The game’s partially inspired by Starship Troopers, right? Great. That movie is all about the expendability of🦋 life. Everyone dies in a bad way. It’s a cheerful meat grinder. “Come on, you apes, you wanna live forever?” The answer, of course, is “No.” The situation is so bad in Starship Troopers that the military is enlisting kids and essentially telling them to fight until every last one of them is dead. But it’s all wrapped up in shiny patriotic banners and bright television commercials.

In Starship Troopers, soldiers die heroically by sacrificing themselves to kill the enemy or die stupidly failing to do so. Helldivers 2 puts that responsibility on us. We get to be those dummies. Which is great, because Helldivers 2 makes it extraordinarily easy to die. That’s the point. That’s the fun irony of the game. Despite all the pomp and circumstance and the honor of being a Helldiver, you’re weak as hell, and you’re going to get killed if you call d𝓀own a resupply wrong and the box lands on you. Your job may be to evacuate people out of a settlement, but your ass is getting into a full Scooby-Doo chase the moment Automatons start moving your way.

And while I’m not usually a multiplayer person because I’m socially broken, playing with other weak, screaming people is beautiful. Without the power fantasy you get in most sci-fi shooters, every mission is a scramble. You’re not Spartans overcoming the odds with supꦚerhuman might. You’re a Helldiver succumbing to the odds while doing your best and screaming at the highest octave your throat can handle. You can accidentally kill your teammates while trying to save them. You will accidentally kill your teammates while trying to save them. You’ll scream at them to move or get down or run, and it’ll be too late.

But here’s the rub: Life is so worthless in the game that you can pretty much return to the field again and again. But rather than being a respawn or a revive or whatever, you’re - narratively - just another soldier showing up to die. Those new soldier pods can land on things too, so, you know, lots of opportunities for killing on purpose or by accident. And also, you can sacrifice yourself and it works. You can pull an entire army of bugs in your direction, drop grenades and an orbital attack around you, and let God take over. All the while, you’re yelling at everyone in your squad to get out of the way. You’re going ho🍌me to mama!

Maybe it’s just that: By incorporating death into the way you play, Helldivers 2 adds room for roleplaying. The game tricks you into having the same mindset as the soldier you’re playing. As you struggle to enter input for drops, you begin to make mistakes the same way a character might make mistakes in the game itself. When you’re shouting at everyone to run, it’s because you’re about to do something crazy. It all ties missions toget𓃲her into one big, beautiful disaster after another. Even when you wiౠn, there’s a chance somebody ain’t coming home. My only regret is that I can’t sacrifice even more for Super Earth.
