Hideo Kojima will be joining the the international jury for the 77th Venice International Film Festival coming this September. It was announced on Sunday that Kojima will be one of the three members judging the Venice Virtual🅠 Reality section of the festival.

The Venice International Film Festival is no stranger when it comes to embracing virtual reality. The VR section, which originated back in 2017, was fully integrated into the festival fo🐎r the first time last year, allowing filmmakers to submit projects in Virtual Reality and win full Venice Lions for their achievements.

“[VR] is a new form of storytelling and art and it needs to be recognized in the same way that film is recognized,” said Liz Rosenthal, co-programmer of Venice VR back in 2019. "What we felt was that VR was being treated as a tech innovation. The way it is written about and exhibited is always in tech terms. We thought, wow, there is such an opportunity to exhibit and celebrate a new art f♑orm.”

With the VR section's success and notability from last year's festival, it's a no brainer to bring Hideo Kojima onto the scene. As a huge name🗹 in the video game community that is always pushing the boundary on what technology can accomplish, he will have some valuable insights while judging the festival entries.

Kojima will be joined this year by Celine Tricart and Asif Kapadia. Tricart is known as a renowned expert in 3D and Virtual Reality with her company, Lucid Dreams Productions, specializing in using technology to create films in unorthodox ways. She also received a Lion for Best VR Immersive Work at the 2019 Venice Film Festival. Kapadia is a prolific filmmaker and documentarian. He has been praised for his unique visual style and his 2015 documentary covering the life and career of Amy Winehouse, Amy, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary. Together, the three members of the jury will award the Grand Jury Prize for Best VR Immersive Work, Best VR Immersive User Experience, and Bꦦest VR Immersive Story.

The𝓰 77th annual Venice International Film Festival begins on Wednesday, September 2 and will run through Saturday, September 12.
