15 The White Lady's Isolation
Much of the history of Hallownest is a perverted tale, a twisted history to fit the praise of the Pale King. It is a land as old as them, yes, but they were hardly the first Higher Being to dwell in that land. Indeed, the White Lady seems to have existed here since time immemorial, joi෴ning with the Pale King to form Hallownest, and in turn the vessels.
Eventually though, she felt deep guilt for her part in creating vessels purely to be sacrificed and took to the Greenpath to seal herself away for the rest of existence. It is here you come upon her, withered and senile within the roots. She has made no real effort to change the world she created, and now she✱ is simply too far gone to do anything at all.
14 The Forbidden Mantis Love ও
Though plenty would have you believe Hallownest encompasses all that you explore in Hollow Knight, many of the far-flung ✱regions are independent or untamed, the Mantis Village prime amongst them. They are a warrior tribe, one with roots before the founding of Hallownestꦕ, and a natural resistance to the allure of The Radiance.
Due to this resistance, in turn, any who welcomed The Radiance were shunned, eventually forming the Traitor Mantis'. Their turmoils did not end there, however, as the Traitor Lord's own daughter fell in love with Ze'mer, one of the Great Knights of Hallownest. She too was then abandoned by her already fractured family, left with none to mourn her but the only other who ever truly loved her.
13 🦂 The Dream Realm 🐻
In the world of Hollow Knight, dreams are not so simple as peaceful thoughts in your sleep, but actions that can manifest in rꦺeality. They exist within the Dream Realm, a plane of exist❀ence that renders them real, but separate from reality. With the Dream Nail, the thin veil obscuring this realm can be traversed.
Within the game, the Dream Real🌸m is actually treated almost as a prison. The Dreamers use it to spy upon the dreams of Hallownest and keep The Radiance at bay. Radiance itself invades the dreams of🎃 others to bring the Infection into the world. It is a place corrupted through impure thought, none of it the fault of any singular dreamer themself.
12 The Pale King's Creations
By Kingdom's Edge, you can encounter a character by the name of Bardoon. He tells you of Wyrms, powerful beings with the power to sense the future, as well as details of the alluring power of light. The Pale King, too, is described as a great light, and with good reason. At Kingdom's Edge, you encounter a cast-off shell of a wyrm after an encounter with Hornet, retrieving the King's Brand from within.
This shell is the Pale King, who shed and took on a smaller form so he could rule over the bugs of Hallownest. He sought deification in exchange for a kingdom in perpetuity. 11 Hornet's Purpose
In the world of Hollow Knight, most things serve a purpose. There's the Knight you play as. There's Quirrel, and his urge to please his master even to the end. Even Zote, and his pursuit of glory. Even the greatest beings of the lore had some part to play.

So though she may have been raised with love, she never knew her own mother and was just a consequence of a choice rather than part of the g🌳rand plan. She was an afterthought, someone who had to find a purpose in a world where everyt🌃hing was ordained. Even if that meant fighting her own siblings.
10 Radiance And The Infectꦚion
In the Resting Grounds, you meet the Seer, the final livi✃ng member of the Moth Tribe. She offers you the dream nail, the power to peer into the dream realm and ultimately put an end to the Dreamers sealing away the infection. But she, and that of her extinct tribe, have a vested interest in this.
With a bit of investment in the lore, you canꦯ discover that the Radiance, a god of great light, was created and worshipped by the moth tribe, until the arrival of the Pale King. Refusing to be forgotten, Radiance forced herself into the minds of Hallownest, and the infection was born. The Seer is then the last living member who once revered Radianceಌ, knowing that it was their blasphemy that in part lead to the downfall of Hallownest.
9 Th🅠e Higher Beings ൲
Though Hollow Knight itself takes place at one point in time, the world of Hallownest at its lowest, there's a grand history and lore to the world, of one before Hallownest. The Moth Tribe, the Mantis Tribe, and the other bugs of kingdoms far afield. But they were all in thrall to something greater, the Higher Beings.
Many followed Wyrms, great burrowing creatures with visions of the future. Some followed the Radiance, an incessant light that promised ease for devotion, or even the simpler Unn, a great slug-like being of nature that brought life to the Greenpath and the creatures in it. But despite all their strength, it wasn't enough. The Pale King needed a kingdom in his legacy, and the Radiance demanded devotion for fear of infection. And they cared not for the consequences of their own hubris.
8 💮 The Families Of Hallownest🦄
Your journey through Hallownest is filled with many colorful characters, all with their own place in the world. But as is true of the rest of the game, very few of these characters are fully disconnected either. There's Quirrel, a lone wanderer you frequently encounter who you learn to be an apprentice of Monomon, one of the Dreamers. Hornet recognizes and finds a kinship in this, her own mother being the dreamer Herrah.
But Hornet, too, was raised by the Pale King, ruler of Hallownest. The creator of the Hollow Knight, a child who unfortunately grew to love their father. By extension, they are then Hornet's own sibling, and being of the same origin, a shared sibling of the Knight players control. They're all connected, many in ways they don't always seem clearly, and yet they are all still trapped in conflict against each other for the vain vision of Hallownest.
7 The Knight's Ties To The Void
With the arrival of the infection, the Pale King sought to fight it off us𒀰ing the power of the void. Using vessels of void and king, he and the White Lady created countless vessel♈s until one they deemed pure, the Hollow Knight. At the bottom of the abyss then, are those unpure and unfit for purpose.
Then what of the Knight? What drives them? The Hollow Knight was deemed the pure vessel yet corrupted by love. So then should the Kni🎃ght be more fit? Once the Void Heart is obtained, the void calms. Perhaps then the Knight is simply the void manifest. They serve no purpose other than to unify the void.
6 The Tarnished Vessel 𒈔
At first, it can be easy to mistake that the Hollow Knight may well be the character you play as.🌼 But upon entering the City of Tea꧑rs, you see a statue immortalizing the Hollow Knight who sacrificed themself to save Hallownest. They would appear then to be a valiant hero, but the truth of it is much darker.
Likely, the sealed Hollow Knight will be the final boss you face. They were created to be a pure vessel without will that could contain the infection for eternity.
