It makes for a great starter weapon if you don't want to harvest parts and are only looking to get rid of machine armour and dispatch them quickly. You'll be able to buy a better version, but not until much later on in the game. This is one weapon you have to have in your arsenal.

How To Begin A Bigger Boom

A Bigger Boom quest location in Horizon Forbidden West

To get your hands on the Prototype Spike Thrower, you'll have to complete the A Bigger Boom Errand. The Errand can be picked up in the game's starting area, just southwest of the Chainscrape tavern. Delah and Boomer will task you with retrieving three Charger Horns and one Fanghorn Rib. If you've been exploring before taking up the Errand, chances are, you may already have three Charger Horns – but if not, both machines are relatively nearby.

How To Get The Charger Horns

Tagging Machine Parts in Horizon Forbidden West

Head out through Chainscrape's southwest gate and down the road – you'll immediately spot a herd of Chargers in a clearing to the left. There will also be a handful of Burrowers patrolling nearby, so make sure you duck into some high grass before you survey the area. Charger Horns can only be attained by shooting them off the machine so make sure you don't accidentally kill them before doing so.

To make it easier to shoot off parts, you can tag them using Aloy's focus. The specific part will be highlighted in purple. You can additionally use Concentration by clicking R3 to zoom in and slow down time.

One to two fully-drawn shots from your Hunter Bow should be enough to knock a horn off – depending on the bow you have. If you're experienced enough, you should be able to remove three of them before your Concentration meter runs out. The Chargers will notice you, but their health should be low enough for you to dispatch them with one well-placed shot each. If you time it well, you can pick up the horns and get out of there before any of the other machines notice.

How To Get The Fanghorn Rib

The Fanghorn can be found to the East of Chainscrape. However, this particular one is a Fire Fanghorn and will use elemental attacks on you. Unlike the Charger Horns, you don't need to knock off any particular parts – you just have to kill the machine. 🍰Make sure you keep an eye out for the nearby Scrappers, as they will be alerted once the fight kick🐬s off.

The Fanghorn has Blaze Canisters on its back. Shoot at them with fire arrows, if you have them, for the Fanghorn to take Chain Reaction damage.

The machine mainly uses charge attacks and a flame burst if you're close by. A good strategy would be to pick at it from afar, dodge when it charges, and then aim for the canisters on its back. A few rounds of this and you should be able to take the Flame Fanghorn down.

Now head back to Delah and Boomer at Chainscrape, and you'll be rewarded with the Prototype Spear Thrower.
