The Slitherfang was revealed back in December, and I worried Guerrilla had gone too big too early. The snake was a huge upgrade on the creatures that came before, but to show it heavily in the marketing seemed to be blowing the surprise, and no one likes a snake that blows too early. When I encountered it during one of the first missions, my fears were exaspeᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚrated, but they s🎉hould have been allayed. Much like the heavy marketing to the elephant (actually called Tremortusks in the game), the reason we got to see the Slitherfang pre-release wasn't because it was the best new machine, but because the best ones were being held back.

The Dreadwing, for example, has been kept under wraps completely, and is not encountered until the mid-to-late game. It's essentially a massive robot bat that swoops down on you and engulfs you in its darkness. There's also the Tidripper, which is only encountered in side missions and while wandering the shores of the late game, meaning only more dedicated explorers will find it. One of the designers clearly saw Lapras from Pokemon and decided "yeah, that," and I have to respect the hustle. It might be my favourite machine of the lot, notꦰ just for its excellent design but because of how it makes you think. It sprays jets of water at you almost constantly, meaning you need to react quickly and pick your moments rather than try and brute force your way through battles as you can with Bellowbacks and Shell-Walkers, which both return with some improvements here.

The water jets of the Tideripper is part of a new tactic from the machines which make the environment itself a hazard for you. Elemental effects are now more useful, but the machines bite back twice as hard. The best example of thisඣ is the Fireclaw and Frostclaw pairing, which is a bunch of huge bears that surround you with fire or a blizzard of ice respectively.

Horizon Forbidden West is not a perfect game. I wandered from quest to quest, always taking the scenic route to slay as many beasts as I could along the way. In the first game, the machines are presented as enemies, and a core plot point is figuring out their origins and clearing them of corruption. Here, the machines just... are. Yes, they attack on sight and tribes have built their walls to keep the beasts out, but the antagonists are barely connected to the machines. They may use machines as tools, but they're like horses in warfare. T🍷he horses aren't the enemy, the soldiers on top of them are. I bore no ill will towards the machines, I wasn't hunting them in the name of what was right, to get revenge, or to make the world a better place, I just wanted someone who could meet my might on the battlefield. The machines, meaner and more menacing than ever, gave me that mat♐ch.
