Who says that horror is only meant for 𝕴the month of October? Scares and frights in video games should be a yearlong affair, and 2023 looks to be emblematic of that. Quite a few fear-inducing titles are set to launch next year, and we here at TheGamer are only too excited to experience the chills and thrills that are in store for us.

From remakes of classic games (you know exactly what we're talking about) to exciting new IPs, our list of most anticipated horror titles coming 2023 barely covers the breadth of what's releasing next year. Read on to discover how exactly our staff wants to dive into trepidation and terror in 2023.

Updated December 21, 2022: There's always time for more horror. Next year is promising to be most fruitful with its horror offerings if many of the prospective titles keep to a 2023 release date. We can only hope, but in the meantime, here are a couple more horror games our team here at TheGamer is looking forward to.

Stalker 2: Heart Of Chornobyl

Stalker 2 Reportedly Won't Release Until 2024 At The Earliest

There are so many fascinating horror games releasing next year, but Stalker 2: Heart of 🐭Chornobyl is easily the one I’m most excited about. It has been thirteen years since we last received an installment in the series, 𓆉and this being built ground up in Unreal Engine 5 with native 4K and ray tracing support has me thrilled to see this FPS survival horror game in action.

While the Metro series comes close, nothing is quite like Stalker, and seeing it come back in such a massive way with all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a next-gen-only title, is setting it up for a one-of-a-kind horror experience. After all the unders✃tandable delays from Ukraine-b🗹ased devs, GSC Game World, I cannot wait to finaౠlly get my hands on what they’ve been crafting for the past six or so years and dive straight into the Heart of Chornobyl once more, even if it makes me jump out of my skin s🌞everal times.

Greyhill Incident

Three aliens at night in a field from Greyhill Incident

I’ve always had a soft spot for horror games, indie ones in particular. You never knoܫw quite what you’re going to get, and it’s always something odd. Greyhill Incident is one of those games. It’s a semi-linear survival game by Refugium Games, and I’ve been keeping my eye on this one for a w🌊hile.

A survival horror set in rural, mid-western America in the 90s, it follows Ryan Baker, a small-town schlub who has to work together with his quirky neighbors to deal with an alien invasion on his patch of paradise. Whilst not doing anything groundbreaking, it’s got a very atmospheric setting that’s reminiscent of a lot of older sci-fi꧑ movies. Plus the dialogue seems well-acted, there are plenty of things to keep you busy aside from being creeped out by aliens in the corn rows, and the developers are passionate about the game, which is always a positive sign.

Dead Space

DeadSpace

Dead Space is my all-time favorite horror experience, and its remake is the game I’m most excited about for next year. Forget Starfield and the Breath of the Wild sequel. I want to play Dead Space again. I’m fairly sure I’m going to get reamed and made fuܫn of by some of my coworkers for having a game I’ve “already played” as my most anticipated horror title.

But dammit, I know what I like. The original Dead Space is fa🐼ntastic, but I can’t waꦚit to play a new and improved version of it. I’m already clapping my hands at the thought of navigating those zero-G sections without having to break my brain to do it.

Redfall

A lot of my excitement for Redfall comes from my unwavering belief in the studio that is making it. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:If you produce nothing but excel𝄹lent games, then, at a certain point, 💛you will earn the benefit of the doubt from me. We have already seen that we are going to be getting access to those signature Arkane-🌊style powers, which is a strong beginning, but from some of the gameplay demos, it seems like Arkane is also going to be leaning into the horror theme.

Well, when the characters aren’t engaged in light-hearted banter, that is. Prey did a great job with its atmosphere. While it looks like Redfall is going for something a little different tonally, they have shown that they can nail those creepy vibes, so I am convinced tha♋t Redfall will have some great moments. Ultimately, I don’t know if Redfall will be a great horror game, b𝓡ut I have all the faith in the world that what we get will be excellent.

Slitterhead

Slitterhead

I know very little about Slitterhead and yet it’s still my most anticipated horror game of next year. At the time of writing, Ghostwire: Tokyo is my Game of the Year, so there’s something about urban Asian horror that obvi🐷ously lands for me.

Though gameplay and narrative remain something of a mystery, Slitterhead has compelling imagery and, most i𓄧mportantly, seems to possess a creative license that allows it to swing for the fences where a lot of triple-A horrors will play safe or go f💃or jump scares. Slitterhead feels fresh rather than familiar, and the horror genre could do with some fresh blood.

The Time I Have Left

If you’re a fan of Parasite Eve, then The Time I Have Left could be the game you’ve been waiting for. It’s a sci-fi survival horror JRPG set in a deserted underground colony. Aline, the apparent sole survivor, has six hours to live. During that time, you must uncover the facility's secrets and maybe even find a way to escape.

Replaying games I’ve finished is a hard ꦿsell at this point, since there are so many games and so little time, but with its short playthrough length and multiple endings, The Time I Have Left sounds like it will be worth repeating. Some events only trigger if you’re in the right place at the right time, so several playthroughs will probably be required to see everything. If the game is as creepy and engaging as it looks, that’s a requirement I’ll glဣadly fulfill.

Ad Infinitum

I love horror and sci-fi that turns the real into something more. I’m also a sucker for often ignored or overlooked ♋perspectives, so a horror game about a German soldier in the Great War clinging onto their sanity as they reckon with the chaos of warfare is right up my street. Nightmarish monstrosities scream and haunt the dark, cramped trenches as mustard gas rains down from the skies in the game’s trailer — it looks spectacular. WW1 horror games are on the rise, and I’m here for it.

Dead Space

Amanda and I have done so much gushing to each other about the Dead Space remake. The original is one of my all-time favourite games because of its th🌌ick atmosphere, memorable 🏅characters (who can forget meeting Dr. Mercer for the first time?), and stunning environmental design.

I know some pe💫ople at TheGamer don’t like the idea of remakes, but Dead Space 2 and 3 introduced a number of mechanical improvements I can’t wait to see applied to the🅰 tighter, more claustrophobic corridors of the USG Ishimura. We’ve already had a taste of the revamped Zero-G, but t🔯he thought of enhanced combat, an AI director to make the game less predictable on future playthroughs, and maybe less of those infamous meteor defense system sections make the idea of setting back into the RIG and grabbing my plasma cutter incredibly exciting.

Alan Wake 2

Alan Wake 2's Story Is A Monster, Says Lead Writer

Alan Wake 2 is my most-anticipated game of 2023 next to Like a Dragon: Ishin!, and a large part of t꧙hat is down to the shift in genre. While🐬 the original had horror elements, its biggest moments were more action-focused — the fight on the Old Gods of Asgard stage with heavy metal blaring immediately springs to mind as just one example.

Now that Sam Lake and Remedy have declared that Al⛦an Wake 2 will be a proper survival horror title, I’m really looking forward to seeing what they can do with the genre, especially considering Control’s spook🎃ier AWE DLC was magnificent. Remedy has always been great at peppering its action titles wit💛h bits of horror, so the idea of them having a full game to experiment with is super exciting.

Redfall

I actually enjoyed the now mostly dead co-op horror survival game Evolve. This came out back in 2015 from developer Turtle Rock before going on to lose most of its community a🔯nd languish in almost complete obscurity until being taken offline at some point in 2018.

As you might expect, I’ve been lookin꧋g for something to fill the void ever since, 🌠meaning that when Redfall was announced by Arkane, my interest was immediately piqued. Something about the formula strikes me as just a little bit similar, enough in any case to make Redfall the most highly anticipated horror game of the year for me.

Ad Infinitum

I wanna say Dead Space, I wanna say Redfa﷽ll, and I wanna say Slitterhead, Sons of the Forest, and so many more.

Say Dead Space. Say Dead Space. Say Dead Space.

2023 looks to be a year for horror fans and I can’t wait,🔴 but Ad Infinitum has really piqued my interest these past couple of weeks.

Dang it.

It’s a game set durꦉing World War 1 from the perspective of a German soldier, exploring their PTSD through nightmarish manifestations that blend body horror with contorted industrial scenery. It’s a unique setting f🍨or a psychological horror, one that moves away from the genre’s origins of small towns and other worlds.

Alan Wake 2

Because I’m not the best at survival horror games — I jumpscare easily and shoot poorly — I wonder how well I will do with Alan Wake 2. I really enjoyed the first game, so I’m looking forw👍ard to the sequel, even if I think I might suck at playing it. I’ll resort to my usual plan when wanting to play survival horror games — find a buddy to help me through it, take turns with the controller, and count my blessings when they get a challenging section instead of me.

It’s been over ten years since the f🅷irst titl💧e, and I really loved the storyline, so I can’t wait to see what unfolds in the long-overdue return of Alan Wake.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

Resident Evil 4 Remake

The fact that we’re this far into the list and no one has brought up Resident Evil 4 Remake is perhaps telling that I’m a massive wuss and that no one else thinks it’s going to be as sc🎉ary as I do. It’s worth remembering though that for as much as Resident Evil 4 shook up survival-horror and put more action into it, horror was still a key part of the experience, and one that is consistently lived up to. If something running at you with a chainsaw can kill you in one hit, leading you to scream and run away every time, it’s a horror, and Resi 4 Remake is only going to up the ante in every regard.

Wronged Us

Have you seen the trailer for Delusional Studio’s upcoming game? Horror games have a few key factors, and creating a captivating and unnerving atmosphere is one of them. It seems that, while still in early development, Wronged Us will be a completely solid experience in this reg🌳ard.

Its brief but convincing gameplay teaser sh꧂ows incredible environments with superb lighting and design work, a classic aspect ratio, and some references to remarkable films and other games. We have seen so little about this game, but I’m already all in. Let’s hope the studio can deliver the experience they want.
