The exaggerated nature of the powers wielded by anime characters can often make them hard to emulate in  campaigns. One character who has an easier time than most is Natsu Dragneel from Fairy Tail, as draconic powers and fire-based magic is something that can be done with the sor♔cerer class.

Natsu Dragneel is the protagonist of Fairy Tail and he is the member of an adventurers guild of the same name. The world of Fairy Tail is a fantasy setting where magic use is common, though it comes in a variety of different forms. In Natsu's case, he uses Fire Dragon Slayer Magic, which was taught to him by the fire dragon Igneel. Natsu can create flames and use them as a weapon, as well as devouring fire in order to revitalize himself. Many of the mages in Fairy Tail are frontline fighters who use magic to augment their combat skills, which is something Natsu often does by weaponizing his ✱flames when fighting unarmed.

Natsu's Class, Skills, And Background

The version of Natsu that we have created uses material from the Player's Handbook. Natsu is a non-variant human sorcerer with the Dragon Ancestor (Red) Sorcerous Origin. Using the basic stat spread listed on page 13 of the Player's Handbook and taking his race into🍒 account, Natsu's starting stats would be STR 15, DEX 13, CON 14, INT 9, WIS 11, and CHA 16. There was a temptation to make Natsu a sorcerer/monk, but the stat spread would be far too wide to make him an effective character. Instead, we've opted for a spellcaster who focuses on powerful fire magic and combat buffs to mꦛake them a threat at close and long-range.

In terms of background, Natsu would suit a Guild Artisan, with their specialty involving exploration and searching hostile environments. His starting skills would be Insight, Persuasion, Intimidation, and Deception. If the variant feat rules are used, then he would benefit from Charger, Du🍬rable, Elemental Adept (Fire), Grappler, Mage Slayer, Mobile, War Caster, or Spell Sniper. In terms of alignment, Natsu would fit into Chaotic Good. Natsu is quick to aid people in need and will risk his life fighting evil mages & monsters, but he aꦺlso has no problem disregarding the law and causing property damage. This is often a problem with all members of Fairy Tail, which has caused them to butt heads with the authorities on many occasions.

Natsu's Spells

In terms of playstyle, Natsu's repertoire is dominated by fire magic and spells that enhance his combat abilities. As such, his spell list would benefit from fire bolt, blade ward, light, true strike, burning hands, feather fall, mage armor, shield, enhance ability, enlarge/reduce, levitate, misty step, scorching ray, daylight, fireball, fly, haste, protection from energy, dimension door, stoneskin, wall of fire, telekinesis, globe of invulnerability, sunbeam, true seeing, delayed blast fireball, fire storm, incendiary cloud, sunburst, meteor storm, time stop, and wish. His best choices 👍for Metamagic powers are Empowered Spell and Careful Spell, followed by Quickened Spell and Distaওnt Spell.

Natsu is very much the archetypical shonen protagonist. He relishes fighting and loves to prove himself on the battlefield, as well as improve his combat abilities. He's oblivious to romance, but is extremely loyal to his friends, to the point where he will lay down his life for them. Natsu's original goal in Fairy Tail was to find Igneel, the dragon who raised him and then vanished mysteriously, which is something that fits easily into most D&D campaigns. Discuss this idea with your DM first, as it's something that they could incorporate into the story of their game, even if they are using a pre-made campaign. Natsu's other goal is to prove the strength of his magic and defeat powerful friends and foes in combat, which he'll find no shortage of in a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. A character like Natsu is extremely easy to create and play🌼 in a D&D setting, and the excitable shonen protagonist might be a fun ride for players to go on.
