What Is Pollution?

Similar to pollution in real life, pollution in Humankind is a byproduct of industrial projects and buildings. Pollution will start to increase when you enter into the industrial era✨ and can ඣincrease per turn.

There are different levels of pollution in the game, so let's take a look at what each level entails.

Global Pollution

This is pollution that is shared around the world between every empire. There a🍨re thre🃏e levels of pollution, that have different effects which you can learn about below.

What Causes Pollution?

There are several factors that contribute to pollution, including districts and infrastructure projects. First, let's take a look at every district that increases pollution.

Districts

The pollution for the districts above is per turn. For example, with one train station, you💯 will gain five pollution each turn.

Infrastructures

Infrastructure projects are additions to districts that you can implement. The projects are meant to upgrade or enhance an area of your city, but several of the🐲m come with an increase in pollution.

Managing Pollution

Humankind city

Now that we know what causes pollution, let's go over how to manage it. Currently, there is only one way to reduce pollution directly. By planting forests, you can reduce pollution by ten for two turns, for a total of 20. After the two tꦬurns have passed, pollution will continue to rise as usual.

Although you can't directly reduce pollution through other methods, you can still decrease the overall pollution of a city. There are four infrastructure projects that can be added to the Makers Quarter to decrease pollution in a city.

  • Hydroelectric Dam: -10% Pollution
  • Solar Farm: -20% Pollution
  • Wind Farm: -30% Pollution
  • Nuclear Plant: -30% Pollution.

With all four of these infrastructures added to a Makers Quarter, you can decrease pollution by 90%. Additionally, you c🦋an add these infrastructures to each city in your empire. With several cities, you can helpꦦ lower global and local pollution at the same time.

Too Much Pollution?

If the global pollution exceeds 100k, the world will be deemed unfit for human life and the game will end the following turn. This is a lot of pollution, but if you build the districts and infrastructures that increase pollution, then the world c🍸an become poll👍uted very quickly and the game will end.

Overall, try to only build these districts and infrastructures if you need to. When you first unlock the train station, think about if you actually need it. It may sound tempting to build something you have just unlocked, but ask yourself if you need the train station. This district will transport units between stations, without having to travel across your empire. This can be helpful, but it isn't always necessary.
