Basically, no zany weapons that wouldn’t make sense or plausibly exist in the Helldivers 2 universe. Lightning weapons exist in its world already, so we can t꧟ell at the very least that there is some level of flexibility in the sci-fi here, but i♐t’s still rooted in realism.
But They’re Not Going To Be Very Useful
Obviously, I think melee weapons are a terrible idea for Helldivers 2. Melee weapons work in a lot of games – when I imagine melee gameplay, I think about Halo’s Energy Sword, because it was my favourite weapon as a kid. In one-to-one combat, a melee weapon wielded by a swiftly moving character can be a dangerous thing and a very efficient way of dispatching enemies. Helldivers 2 does not have one to one combat. In f൩act, it usually has the very opposite – both Terminids and Automatons will swarm you to death, and letting them get close enough for melee combat is generally a recipe for disaster.
Considering that Arrowhead wants to keep an emphasis on weapons being realistic in the lore, it seems unlikely we’re going to get anything ridiculously OP that wouldn’t make sense on a battlefield. The weapons we have now are largely things that could be found on a battlefield in the modern day – flam🅷ethrowers, rifles, shotguns. The stuff that goes into sci-fi territory are the laser and electric weapons, but really, Helldivers 2 is mostly about blowing stuff up. A gravity hammer? Maybe, I don’t know. But considering that realistic melee weapons aren’t going to be very effective at taking out several enemies at a go and can only be used in close range, I can’t imagine choosing them over a long-rang🦩e weapon.
Do I trust Arrowhead to๊ make these weapons fun to use and at least moderately effective? Sure! But I doubt I’ll ever want to use one myself, unless I was doing specific missions where I’m likely to get swarmed anyway, like Automaton Eradication missions. If anybody could prove me wrong about this, though, it’s Arrowhead, and I look forward to seeing if they actually do.
