Indie publisheꦫrs are saying that the PlayStation Vita isn’t dead yet des🍨pite rumors to the contrary.
Sony ended producti♈on of the PlayStation Vita last March, terminating any plans it had of making a handheld game console to take on Nintendo. At one point, Sony had admitted th🔥ey were ceding that market back in 2015 when they announced there would be no successor to the Vita and would instead focus on phones and home consoles.
The Vita never quite made it in the same way that Nintendo handhelds did. Sony never released final sales figures for 𝔉the Vita, but it’s estimated that there are out there. That’s nothing compared to 🅷the 3DS at 75 million units or even the Nintendo Switch at 35 million and counting, but that’s still a fairly substantial user base.
It’s big enough that, even though Sony has stopped making them, indie game developers are still making and selling games for the Vita. In a move few would have expected, the Vita went from selling mainstream titles to being a niche platform filled with classic JRPGs and visual novels, as well as ported PC indie games like Stardew Valley and Minecraft.
However, since Sony has stopped 💖making discs, the only way to get new games on the Vita is to download them from the PlayStation Store. This means that the Vita's days are numbered. One day Sony will terminate support for the Vita and remove its access to the PS Store. When that happens, the Vita will have lost its share of the market almost entirely.
There had been a shocking report of the Vita's removal of support from Jack Of All Controllers that Sony had already set a date of early 2020, citing a report from indie developer Suzaku on their Sense: A Cyberpunk Ghost Story Kickstarter . According to , it seem꧂s that was a case of jumping to conclusions. Other indie developers, such as Ratalaika Games and Cowcat Games, have jumped in to say they’ve not received any termination date from Sony, which means the Vita will live to game another day.
That said, the Vita’s end will likely be coming in the foreseeable. It just dep⛎ends on how long ind♔ie gamers keep playing on it.
