Updated on June 15, 2024 by Gabrielle Castania: With the version 1.6 update refreshing plenty of mods, we're updating our guide on how to install Stardew Valley mods to help you get your mod manager, SMAPI, installed, as well as make suggestions for some of our favorite Stardew Valley mods.

Step One: Install SMAPI

In order to begin using mods in Stardew Valley, you'll first need to install a program that runs your mods for you, and offers plenty of helpful smart management help for your mods. The program you need is called SMAPI, and it does most of the work for you once you've downloaded it .

To begin installing Stardew Valley mods, you must extract the downloaded SMAPI file into the game's files. To find them, the file path to your Stardew Valley folder is as follows:

• This PC > Local Disk (C:) > Program Files (x86) > Steam > steamapps > common > Stardew Valley

Don't install SMAPI into the Mods folder! It's a mod manager, not a mod itself, so leave it 🎃in the regular game files.

Once you've extracted the SMAPI file, run the SMAPI Installer from the downloads and follow the prompts in the small, black square window, and it will do the rest for you. Whenever you run Stardew Valley, SMAPI will check for any out of date mods and warn you that new versions are available.

Can You Play Stardew Valley Mods With Steam?

After you set SMAPI up, you'll have to redirect Steam to the correct application to boot up. SMAPI creates a "StardewModdingAPI" file inside the game folder. You can either directly click this within the game folde🐬r to load uཧp modded Stardew Valley or you can redirect Steam's game launch to that file so that when you press play in Steam it opens the modded version.

To find the modded Stardew Valley application:

• This PC > Local Disk (C:) > Program Files (x84) > Steam > steamapps > common > Stardew Valley > StardewModdingAPI

To redirect Steam to the modded version:

• Right-click the Stardew Valley game in your library
• Click properties
• In the General tab at the very bottom will be "Launch Options" with a text box. You must enter the designated location of the API file into here word for word.
• Type this into the text box, including the quotations and percentages: "c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\Stardew Valley\StardewModdingAPI.exe" %command%

Step Two: Download And Install Mods

Now that your SMAPI installation is finished, you'll be able to download mods to extract to the Mods folder.

Some mods through Nexus requ﷽ire additional set-up with other mods, but not all will. Plenty run w🥂ith just SMAPI, so check your mods for links and information before installing.

Once you have the mods downloaded, you'll need to extract the mod file to the Mods folder from the file pathing above, where you installed SMAPI. You can also extract them right from your Downloads folder into the Mods folder to save time. Next time you run the game, SMAPI checks mods before it runs.
