It's odd seeing Masahiro Sakurai sitting in his plain white office talking about a video game when it's not 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I'm glad he's finally taking a break (and glad the rest of us can stop microanalysing the colour of his shirt or movement of his hands to predict the next fighter), and I know he's made other games and other YouTube videos previously, but he'll always be The Smash Guy to millions of gamers. It's one of his other games that has always held my affection though, and (not to become one of those shirt analysers), I hope this latest video is a hint that we haven't seen the last of Kid Icarus.
Much like Sakurai himself, most people will think of Kid Icarus as The Smash Guy. Despite its quality, Kid Icarus would be lucky to be considered a C-tier Nintendo mascot, way below not just Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon, but also Metroid, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Donkey Kong, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Animal Crossing, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Fire Emblem, Kirby, and I'll stop there before I hurt the little guy's feelings. But there were a lot more I could list. Those who do love Kid Icarus, though, seem to have adopted a siege mentality. Us against the world. When 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:I spoke to Chris Pratt and Charlie D🌸ay about 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:the Mario movie, Mario playing 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Kid Icaru𓆉s was their favourite Easte♉r Egg, and I imagine gamers of my generation and above were left with the ൲same feeling.
Sakurai's video itself is more of a deep dive into how Kid Icarus: Uprising, the third game in the series, came to be. It launched on the 3DS, making use of the handheld's unique tech, and was designed to be a tech demo for the 3DS itself. Sakurai revealed that after Brawl, Nintendo asked him to utilise the machine's capabilities to make a game for the more hardcore gamer market, with Sakurai looking at what casual games like Touch! Generations had done and transplanting that into Uprising.
Kid Icarus has survived through sheer force of will. I just told you Uprising was the third game in the series, but when do you think it started? 2008? 2005? No, I wouldn't ask unless there were huge gaps between releases, right? Let's say... 1999? The correct answer is actually 1986. Kid Icarus is ten years older than Pokemon, the same age as The Legend of Zelda, and just one year younger than Super Mario Bros., and it has just three games to its name. Kid Icarus in '86, Of Myths and Monsters in 1991, and then Uprising 21 years later. Fans are used to feeding off scraps, and Sakurai just tossed us another one.
While the video itself is mainly a deep dive into how the game came to be and the technical aspects of its development process, Sakurai includes a typically cryptic message. "It's a shame that it's only lived on the 3DS, as I'd love to play on a bigger screen with smoother graphics," Sakurai ends with. Does he really just mean 'what a gosh darn shame' or is he working on doing exactly that? It's been 11 years since the last game, so Kid Icarus has come back from much longer absences.
It seems like if Kid Icarus is to return, it will be via a remake. Personally, I don't believe the line that remakes are there to test the water for new projects in the future - 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Crash Bandicoot's stellar remake led to an insulting MOBA, Spyro still has not emerged, I doubt we'll see another 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Dead Space, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Resident Evil was going strong before 4 came back, and we already knew we were getting Mass Effect 4/5/Yet To Be Named before the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Legendary Edition. Remakes are just a less risky way to make money off fans - but baby, if you remake Kid Icarus Uprising (or even just the first one, it's even better) you can take my easy money any day.
Now, do we think Sakurai's blue shirt means that Kid Icarus: Uprising will be out in July, because July has four letters and blue has four letters? And Sakurai plays the game with his hands, of which he has two, each of which have five fingers, so two plus five plus five equals 12, therefore Kid Icarus: Uprising will shadow drop on July 12. You heard it here first.
