The Last Of Us Part 2 is a direct follow-up to the original game so newer gamers won't get the full impact of the story. Naughty Dog pays major respect to Joel's initial journey by making several references to the awa𓆉rd-winning game. These references come in the form of items found throughout the world and specific dialogue moments.
The Last Of Us 2 is much more open than any Naughty Dog game. With that being said, there are much more than 10 Easter eggs and references. All of them such as Joe🏅l's love for coffee, Joel's promise to teach Ellie the guitar, an infection scanner from the original, and Joel's picture of Sarah, could♈n't make it on this list. 10 Joel's Watch 🎉

There is no direct dialogue about the callback but the framing matches perfectly.
8 Pallets
Ellie saw a pallet while exploring a museum and terrible memories resurfaced. She couldn't swim in the first game and had to be pushed arꦇound on a pallet. Every water puzzle included a pallet and the repetition got old, plus the mechanics were incredibly wonky.
The small dialogue about the pallet is an inside joke and a slight jab at Naughty Dog's old game. One of the selling points for The Last Of Us Part 2 was Ellie's newfound swimming abilities, which illustrates t📖he general hatred toward the original's water segments.
7 💦 The Tu🔯rning
The turning is Ellie's favorite arcade game. It's a bloody fighting game that features 𝓡many decapitations. She finds an arcade machine while🎃 exploring a neighborhood with Joel and they talk about it. Joel mentions that he doesn't understand why people like video games. The easter egg gets escalated in the Left Behind DLC where you actually get to play the game. The arcade machine can be found in the sequel and only players of the original will get the reference.
6 Sam's Toy
Sam and Henry's story is one of the saddest parts of the game. Ellie bonded with Sam, one of the only people her own age, and he brought out her child-like nature. It was one of Ellie's only reprieves from the dark world. Sam's death had a signific﷽ant impact on her. So much so that she kept his robot toy as a memento of her dear friend. This toy can be found early in the game when players get to explore Ellie's house in Jackson.
5 Bill
Bill was one of the few surviving side characters from The Last of Us. Ellie did not like him too much but he did make a significant impact on her. He is not easy to forget with his unpleasant and chaotic attitude. His town was guarded by a series of booby traps that Ellie is reminded of often in The Last of Us Part 2.
A smaller reference comes in the form of a ch🐼ess set with its pawns set up to resemble Bobby Fisher's during the Rosenwald Memorable Tournament. Bill would constantly nag at Ellie includ🃏ing one time when he called her Bobby Fisher for messing with his chess set.
4 Joel's Interro♛꧙gation Technique
Joel did whatever it took to survive in the apocalypse. He developed an interrogation technique where he makes one person mark the desired location on a map and the location is confirmed by a buddy. The process requires a lot of violence and stabbing until Joel gets what he wants. We got to experience FEDRA rule at the beginning of the first game, which gives a larger backstory to Seattle's history. The FEDRA soldiers kept a🐷 strict schedule and procedure to make sure there are no outbreaks in their zone.
1 Astronaut
The first game has a small dialogue moment where Joel and Ellie discuss who th𒀰ey want to be when they grow up. Ellie talks about wanting to be an astronaut and that small comment♕ explodes in the sequel. Joel takes Ellie to a museum and has her imagine being launched into space. This is a fun connection to the first game that shows how much Joel cares for Ellie.
