It is implied that both Riley and Ellie were sent there to ensure their safety growing up.

When Joel finally reunites with Toꦫmmy, he is married and has spent his years in a small settlement, w🍨hich has established some semblance of normalcy.
They even restored electricity, a feat they accomplished while the player explores ♑the nearby dam they brought back to a functioning state. At the end of the game, Joel and Ellie are returning here to start a new life.
2 Ellie's Immunity ✤
Ellie is so important because she is immune to the disease. Joel is tasked with bringing her to the Fireflies' headquarters so doctors can study her and potentially come up with a vaccine. Because of her immunity, she does not need to put on a gas mask when spores are in the air. One wonders if her curious condition will play a 💜role in the sequel.
1 The Ending ⛄
A vaccine can only be crafted if the doctors perform an operation on Ellie that will ultimately end her life. Joel cannot live with this idea, so he massacres all t𝓡he Fireflies in the building and breaks her out, also killing Marlene in the process. Ellie is already under anesthesia and only wakes up in the car afterwards, so he crafts a lie to explain why they left. The game ends with Ellie asking Joel to swear his story is true, to which he replies "I swear."
