During Layers of Fear — a psychological horror experience — you play as what can be deemed the textbook definition of the ‘tortured artist’. The game has three different endings you can either 💧stumble upon or aim for.
Each🌞 of the endings depends upon the choices you make during the game, and as to whether or not these choices could be deemed selfish or selfless somewhat. Essentially, the ending you come across will depend on how you treat your wife and child while playing.
Here are a few tips on how to try and achi🔥eve each of the various endings.
Ending One: A Portrait Of You
The self-portrait ending would be dee❀med to be the selfish en🗹ding.
Ending One can be achieved by:
- Ignore your family at all costs to focus on your art.
- Avoid dying at all costs. Therefore, avoid your wife.
- Regularly stare at your paintings.
- Follow, and stare at, the rats.
- Only interact with items needed to drive the story forward or related to yourself.
After the self-portrait reveal, it appears that the 👍painting is then displayed in a gallery of sorts and the rest is left up to interpretation. We can only assume our tortured artist, despite being selfis🐈h, overcame his madness to become a successful artist of sorts...
Ending Two: A Portrait Of Your Wife
The ending featuring a portrait of your wife is deemed to be the neutral ending to t💝he game — the middle-ground between ending’s one and three. This ending is the most common fo🌠r gamers who go in blind, and is the ending that we achieved the first time around too.
Ending 2 can be achieved by:
- Only pick up the items required to drive the story forward.
- Trigger only one death scene, related to your wife, and no more.
- When you see the child in the red hall, do not approach them.
When you encounter this ending, the portrait of a beautiful young woman soon turns ghastl𝕴y and grim, befﷺore being thrown away to reveal the same original portrait again.
Alas, do not end your game here. Once the cutscene🌄 ends, walk towards the table in front of you and pick up the♎ book. This will unlock the ‘Sketchbook of the Damned Achievement’.
Ending 3: A Portrait Of Your Wife And Child
The ending featuring the portrait of both your wife and child is deemed to be a selfless ending. It is family-focused, and shows your regret reg🥂arding your life as an artist. You overcome your madness but still remain stuck, mentally, in your past. Thܫis could be considered a redemption arc, somewhat.
Th꧅is ending is considered to be the trickiest to come across, but we’re here to aid you.
Ending Three can be achieved by:
- Besides items needed to drive the story forward, ignore all items related to yourself.
- Pick up items relating to your wife, such as flowers.
- Approach your wife at every given opportunity.
- Ignore your paintings and any rats you see.
- When you see the child in the red hall, approach them.
- Push the wheelchair found towards the end of the game.
This finale will feature a painting of both your wife and child. You will then walk into another room to see a further collection of paintings of your wife too — insinuating this ending may a🦄lso be coꩲnnected to the first one too.
Ultimately, you set all of the paintings ⛎alight and burn alongside them, likely ridden with guilt and grief🌜.
