The LCK will host an Acꦉademy Series in hopes to grow and develop new talent, according to Kevin Kim of Korizon Esports. The series will have four open cup tournaments with 64 teams.
The current LCK teams, like T1 and DRX, will send their academy players to participate against amateur teams. There will be a tournament every month, beginning in August and ending in𒅌 November with a prize pool of ₩ 10,000,000 (around $8,500). The top two teams of each tournament will be seeded into a c♏hampionship held in December.
In order to be eligible for the series, a player must meet the follow🍬ing cr♔iteria:
- 12 years or older
- Diamond III or above
- Not registered on any professional roster
- Never played professionally in any region
The main criteria to take note of is the minimum age requirement. A play𒉰er must b༒e at least 17 to be eligible to play professionally. The fact that a 12-year-old can compete in an LCK sponsored event means teams are looking to develop talent long term.
The fact that the LCK found 64 teams of five players, 320 players in total, to compete with hopes of becoming professional players puts most other regions to shame. The amount of new talent continuing to come out of Korea is nothing short of astonishing. LCS teams, in particular, have a bad habit of signing imported players past their prime. If North America can not develop an adequate amount of young talent, teams should look at young players in other regions.
