One of my closest friends is a senior lecturer at Swansea University, and considering my job is to write about video games, our careers crossing paths was never something I anticipated. Yet here we are, 20 years into our friendship, most of which we’ve spent pu🐓rsuing our respective careers, and I’m reviewing a board game he helped create.

Legless In London, a 19th Centu𒆙ry amputee simulation experience, was created with the help of one of my best friends. This fact made me a little nervous when I was presented with the opportunity to write about it. What if I didn’t enjoy the game, or found it downright boring? I’d need to be honest, and I’m sure my friend, , would want me to be. Thankfully, I don’t need to worry about that, as I found it very enjoyable indeed.

This Almost Certainly Isn't Like Any Board Game You've Played Before

This board game has been spun off from (the book penned by the friend I mentioned earlier). You might not think that would make for a good game, but that’s where you’d be wrong. In fact, it not being your standard tabletop farꦯe is exactly what makes Legless In London so interesting.

The premise is tღhat you must assume the role of a lower leg amputee trying to get around in Victorian London. You have various tasks that you need to complete in order to win the game with all sorts of hurdles - the kind that might hamper someone with an artificial leg - preventing you from doing so quite as easily as someone who still has both their lower limbs.

There’s a lot to set up before you begin 💞playing, and then a lot going on once the game is underway, but it’s less confusing and intimidating than it appears. Since this is a board game that revolves around accessibility, making it as accessible as possible to as many people as possible was of the utmost importance during its creation.

Even though there are plenty of rules, most have been kept short to keep th🐲e at꧋tention of neurodivergent players. It’s also the kind of game that doesn’t require you to studiously pore over the rulebook before you can get started. I and the others I played with learned the basics and then quickly got to grips with everything else along the way.

Accessibility Is Key

The length of each game has also been factored in when considering how long a board game can keep some people’s attention. I’m yet to play a round that has lasted longer th🔯an an hour, and I’m also yet to experience two games that have been anywhere close to feeling the same.

Each character not only has different goals, but also starts with different amounts of money, and some are healthier than others and thus come with a predetermined advantage. Not only a damning👍 representation of the imbalance there would have been in Victorian society - for everyone, not just amputees - but also a dam♋ning reminder of how far we still have to go in the present day.

While the goals and the locations on the board where those goals are achieved differ from character to ෴character, the basic premise of all of them is to find work, love, and property. At the centre of the board is a shop in which you can buy artificial legs that will aid you in achieving those goals, each of them providing buffs and nerfs for certain tasks. The Golden Leg looks good so it will help you find love, for instance. However, it’s rather impractical so will impact your mobiliꦬty and efficiency

Even though some characters start with more money than others, there’s a constant flow of what are called Street Events that can quickly level the playing field. Street Events are like Chance cards, but due to the faster-paced nature of Legless In London compared to Monopoly, they’re factored in much more often. You might get roughed up and lose HP, happen upon some cash𒁏, or even stumble into bagging yourself an artificial leg without having to pay for the privilege.

Speaking of HP, that’s one of many thꦉings you will need to keep a close eye on alongside your bank balance. Lose all your health and you’ll head to the Sickroom. Run out of luck there and your character can die. Death in Legless In London, as in many tabletop games, means you lose everything and have to start over with a fresh character.

All you need to do is choose your character and the app can 🌳then be used to track your HP, cash, artificial legs, and what you’ve achieved so far. It’s another way in which Legless In London is more accessible than most other board games out there, as well as a far cleaner and easier way to play the game.

Legless In London probably isn’t a game many of you w👍ould have considered when on the hunt for your next board game night winner. Full transparency, if it weren’t for one of♎ my best friends having a hand in its creation, it might have never landed on my radar either. However, I’m very glad I did, and very happy I’ve been given the chance to try it out.

It’s a lot of fun, super easy to pick up despite initial appearances, and has a level of replayability board games strive for. Not to mention at £39.99 ($51), it’s reasonably priced to boot.
