The PlayStation was Sony🍨’s very first console. Released in 1994, the PlayStation competed with the Nintendo 64, the Sega Saturn, and the Atari Jaguar. The 🍰system brought many classic like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Metal Gear Solid, but it also created new series like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon.
With all of the amazing games that were released for the system, it’s inevitable that some would get o🏅verlooked. So, to help shine some light on some games that didn’t get attention in there day, here are 10 lesser-known PlayStation games that could use more love.
10 Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain
Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain centers around Kain who has just been🅰 killed and t🧜urned into a vampire before deciding to set out for revenge. The game plays similarly to the early Legend of Zelda games with a top-down view and♛ a strong emphasis on combat.
You spend a majority of the game earning new vampiric ❀powers like turning into a wolf, turning into🅺 a bat, learning new spells, and more. You make your way through a variety of dungeons, taking out enemies and sucking people’s blood when you need to refill on health.
9 Tobal 2
The character design in Tobal 2 was done by Akira Toriyama, who is most well-known for creating the Dragon Ball series. He has done a lot 👍of video game character design in the pꦑast from the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, Blue Dragon, and many more.
Tobal 2 is a fighting game that has a large cast of colorful characters, all with unique and well-crafted personalities. Each character in the game looks l🍎ike they were ripped straight out of an Akira Toriyama manga. It controls like an old 3D fighting game like the Virtua Fighter series, the Tekken series, or Battle Arena Toshinden.
8 Alundra
Alundra plays very similarly to old-school, top-down The Legend of Zelda games. The goal of the game is to enter the dreams of different people and help them battle their inner demons. The story touches on some heavy issues like existentialism, de🅷pression, and more. There are also some RPG and 𒀰exploration elements added to the game.
Unlike most PlayStation 1 games, Alundra is entirely 2D and made up of sprites, so the visuals still hold up today. The game was localized by Working🀅 Designs, who would often bring over games that wouldn’t typically ♛be brought over to North America.
7 Heart of Darkness
Heart of Darkness is a ﷽cinematic platform, similar to games like the original Prince of Persia, Out of this World, and Blackthorn. You play as a young boy who travels to an alien world in an attempt to save his dog. You go through a variety of well-detailed areas trying to solve puzzles through trial and error and are giving a lighting gun to take out enemies. There are many horrible ways to die in the game, some by the odd shadow creatures tha✨t stalk you,🐻 and some from the deadly environment around you.
6 Rival Schools

Every character has a designated partner with both coming from t⛦he same school. After Final Fantasy VII Squaresoft had a lot of cash and creative freedom to try out some new stuff. They tried a sle🐼w of different genres from shoot ‘em ups with Einhänder, fighting games with the previously mentioned Tobal games, or dungeon crawlers with the Chocobo's Dungeon games.
Bushido Blade is a slow-paced fighting game where a single hit can kill most enemies. You can take out your enemy’s arms and legs to incapacitate them and make the final ༺hit, but at any point, a single hi♏t can also kill you if placed correctly.
4 Parasite Eve
Parasite Eve is based on a Japanese book of the same🃏 name which was also part of Squaresoft’s experimental phase following the release and success of Final Fantasy VII.
Parasite Eve takes the gameplay found in Resident Evil and includes a lot of RPG elements, as well as a real-time, turn-based combat s꧃ystem that plays similarly to Final Fantasy XII’s combat system. Like ma൲ny of Sq🌸uaresoft’s RPGs on the PlayStation 1, Parasite Eve spans m✤any discs to fit in all of the combat, cutscenes, and long, deep story.
3 In the Hunt
While most shoot ‘em upsꦛ take place in space wi🅘th spaceships and robots, In the Hunt takes place underwater with submarines a♍nd ships. The sprite art used in the game is phenomenal and one of the standout features of the ga🐷me.
🍸The sprite work may also🅺 look familiar to fans of the SNK run and gun series Metal Slug. The creators of In the Hunt later went on to create the Metal Slug series with sprite work that is equally or e🔯ven possibly betteꦜr than what is found in In the Hunt.
2 Vib Ribbon
Vib Ribbon is a Japanese exclusive musical 🐠rhythm game the lets you use your own personal CDs to make tracks to play on. It works similarly to other rhythm games where you must press a button in time with the beat in order to progress.
The game acts as a unique piece of software that loaded into the RAM, which is how it w🔥ould take your personal CDs and make a unique level out of any track on them. The graphics were all vector-based, something similar to what you would find on the failed 𓃲Vectrex console.
1 Um Jammer Lammy
While is often spoken of and e🍬ven recently got remade for the PlayStation 4, Um Jammer Lammy, its spiritual sequel barely gets any love. Um Jammer Lammy plays very similarly to Parappa the Rapper, as✱ you would have to go through a sequence within theꦬ story and tap buttons on the beat in order to progress.
Also, like its predecessor, Um Jammer Lammy has a full story that links all of the songs to m𝓰ake the experience feel cohesive. After beating the game, you can even replay all of the levels as Parappa.
