Get Acquainted With The Spider Gadget
During his time wandering the rough and tumble streets of Japan, Joryu will acquire a number of different gadgets that all play an important role in combat. However, none of them are even close to as versatile as the Spider Gadget. By holding the grapple button, Joryu will entangle an enemy. Pressing the stick to either side will whip the enemy in that direction. Any of their allies caught in the crossfire will be taken out with them.
But that's not it! Joryu can also cancel the entanglement by blocking an incoming attack, leaving his opponent frozen for a surprising amount of time. Or, instead of swinging them to the side, you can press backward, and have Joryu whip his opponent directly behind him. This option will rarely hit other enemies, but causes considerably more damage. Lastly, Joryu can press the grapple button a second time, and it will yank his opponent directly toward him (Scorpion style), and cause Joryu to bounce them off the ground, leaving them airborne and making them very easy to combo.
But wait, there's more! If you entangle an enemy they will drop their weapon! Meaning that you can disarm any of those pesky gun-wielding goons. Also, remember how we said you can swing the baddie you have entangled at their buddies? Well, you can hold an entangl▨ed enemy for as long as you like, and wait for their buddies to group up so that you can take them all out with a si🌄ngle, mighty yoink.
The only real downside is that, in its ꦏbasic form, the Spider Gadget won't be able to entangle heavy enemies. However, you can still toss their buddies into them, so it isn't too big of a deal and d෴oesn't stop the Spider Gear from being an essential tool in Joryu's toolkit.
Give 'Em A Taste Of Their Own Medicine
The simple truth is that your foes will rarely fight fair. Not only will they team up on you, but they will often be armed to the teeth. As we mentioned in the Spider Gadget section above, once you entangle a foe they will drop their weapon. However, don't leave it lying on the ground, pick it✃ up and see🥂 how they like being clubbed with a bat or stabbed with a knife.
Naturally, you want to grab these weapons because it is fun to get a little stabby sometimes, but more importantly, if you are using them then your enemies aren't. Enemies will often pick up a weapon if it is left lying on the ground. So, if you don't want to get 𝐆shot, make sure to pick that g𒀰un up and put it to use. If you don't, they will.
Some of your Heat Actions are directly tethered to certain weapons, but that heat bar can be a precious resource. More often than not, those weapon-based Heat Actions aren't a great use of your meter. But hell, they are fun, so feel free to ignore ourও advice and indulge in the spectacle!
Agent Style Vs. Yakuza Style
Very early in the game, you will find that you have two distinct styles. While you begin the game using the Agent Style. You will unlock tℱhe Yakuza Style pretty early. Naturally, the Agent Style comes with a number of fancy bells and whistles.
We already went into great detail about the fantastic Spider Gadget, but you'll get other incredibly useful Agent Tools as well. Generally, these tools help you maintain space, distract your foes, and disable multiple enemies at a time. The Agent Style's attacks also tend to consist of wide swings that are good at tagging multiple foes. Natural🍰ly, this is the style best suited for taking on groups of enemies.
The Yakuza Style, on the other hand, comes with chargeable attacks that can break through an enemy's guard, and just generally hits harder. This i♎s clearly a style that w꧟as designed for battling tougher enemies.
However, while this is a useful way to view these styles, nothing is ever truly that simple. The Agent Style doesn't pack the same punch as the Yakuza Style, but it does have some excellent tools for distracting individual foes. Meanwhile, the Yakuza Style doesn't have as many moves for hitting large swaths of enemies, but when you are fighting a group that has multiple heavier thugs, those charge attacks are invaluable. So, feel free to mix it up. These styles have some versatility built into them!
Heat Bar Management
There are primarily two ways to use your heat meter in Like A Dragon Gaiden. You can use the series' trademark Heat Actions, or, if you can enter into your Heat Mode. As a rule of thumb, Heat Mode is quite simply better for dealing out a ton of damage to large groups of enemies or dishing out hefty damage to a singular enemy (depending on the fighting style you are using, of co🃏urse).
The always flashy Heat Actions are certainly damaging, but the level of destruction they are able to deliver certainly pales in comparison to your Heat Mode. Moreover, while you need a full bar of Heat meter to enter into the Heat Mode, you don't need to use all that meter. You enter in🔯to it, land a devastatജing combo on a group of enemies, and then cancel it.
But all is not lost for Heat Actions. As you progress through the game, and perform tasks for Akame, you will be able to unlock the ability to upgrade your Heat Actions. One such upgrade will provide you with a damage buff after you perform a Heat Action, greatly enhancin🐼g their utility. So, as you work your way through the game, you will find that they become more and more viable.
A Pocket Full Of Burgers
There was a time when the Yakuza games would limit your inventory space, meaning that you would have to balance what you had on you﷽ at all times. But not in Like A Dragon Gaiden. You can fill your pockets in this game. In order to balance this, the developers did place a limit on how many of a specific healing item you can carry. But as is so often the case in life, burgers are the solution to this issue.
Well, not just burgers, but basically any food you can purchase to go. The convenience store is a great place to start. Load up on energy drinks, bento boxes, and sushi. As a rule of thumb, the more expensive the item of food, the more HP it will replenish.
Another thing to keep in mind is that you can down these items at any time during battle as long as you are still alive. That means that if you are thrown through the air with a sliver of health left, you can down a bowl of Oden before you hi🍌t the ground and survive the fall.
How To Approach Tough Enemies
Like A Dragon Gaiden is loaded with tough enemies. Unlike the typical street tough you encounter in swarms, you'll need to approach these enemies differently. For starters, as great as the Spider Gadget is, it doesn't play much of a role here. If you try to use it, you will engage in a tug of war, and even if you win you don't get much benefit from it. In general, you aren't going to want to use your Agent Style in these encounters unless you are clearing out goons first.
The first thing you are going to want to do is to lock on to your opponent, but you don't want to just button mash. Attacks from the bosses can often swallow your health bar whole, especially when you are playing on a harder difficulty. So, instead, you want to play a little more reactively. Wait for them to take a swing at you, then use your dodge to evade their attack, and land a few punches to their back. This reactive strategy🍎 will take you surprisingly far.
Once the boss gets to around half-health, they will charge up and enter into their own version of Heat Mode. Keep fighting them are you normally would, but if they start posing and glowing prepare yourself, as they are about to use their big special attack. Every boss-type enemy has one, and you should deal with all of them the same way. Get some distance, then, when they are using the attack, hold the lock-on button and evade into them. This will trigger your counter, which does a ton of damage and leaves them vulnerable.
Naturally, if you end up catching a few stray shots, and you absolutely will, you can always pause the action, and chow d⛦own on whatever food you ✃have in your pocket.
