Welcome To Tosa

Like A Dragon Ishin, Chapter 1, Ryoma punches a Tosa jerk right in the face

After watching a cutscene that introduces you to the world of Ishin, you will start your journey with a series of tutorial battles. These encounters are pretty simple, you just need to foll💎ow the directions on the screen. Just in case you are wondering, you will not be able to defeat enemies before completing the tutorial. Once you have learned the basics of the Brawler style and the Swordsman style, you will be able to explore a little.

Like A Dragon Ishin, Chapter 1, Ryoma talking to people, looking for the schoolhouse

You are going to need to find the schoolhouse. Unfortunately, there are no convenient markers on the map. However, all you need to do is saunter over to the middle of the main road. By the stairs, there will be a man with a speech bubble above his head. Talk to him and you will be told where the schoolhouse is. Head there by following the indic🧜ator on your map. After talking to your father about his plans, you will be instructed to go meet up with your brother.

Now you will need to find the Tosa Loyalists' Dojo. Head back to the stairs that were next to the guy who told you about the schoolhouse's location. Now, head up those stairs and talk to the lady with the speech bubble above her head. She will tell you where the Loyalists' Dojo is. Talk to the henchmen guarding the entrance: he will turn you away.

What you need to do is to head back down those stairs and take a left. You should see a couple of ronin harassing some people. Be a good Samaritan and beat up the ronin. This battle will🦩 act as y🐠our introduction to the Swordsman style. Once you have finished them off, you will be able to enter the dojo.

After watching a cutscene, you will be given your first gun. Head to the restaurant in the middle of town (it will be marked on your map). You will now engage in another battle, this one will tea🎀ch you how to use the Gunman style a🌳nd Wild Dancer style.

After completing the tutorial, you can choose to head back to the dojo. However, we would recommend grabbing some healing items from the nearby stall first, as you are about to face off against your first boss. There are𝓰 also a few gangs hanging around, so, if you want to level up, you can do so by slapping them around🍨.

Izo Boss Fight

Like A Dragon Ishin, Chapter 1, Ito introduces himself

To start off, you are going to want to thin out this group. So, get a little distance from Izo, and take on the standard goons first and foremost. You move pretty slowly when you are locked on, so once you back up far enough and make a little space, release the lock-on button and hold the dodge button to sprint. Run straight to the other side of the alley. This will buy you enough time to take out some of Izo's cronies.

Like A Dragon Ishin, Chapter 1, Ryoma slashes Izo's back

Once you have cleared out most of his men, it is time to focus on Izo. Izo isn't so bad, he uses wide, sweeping sword attacks. So, he telegraphs his moves. As the game itself suggests, you are going to want to dodge around him as he is swinging his sword. This will help you get to his back. Once you do, hit him with a combo.

You can block Izo's attacks without suffering any consequences. However, it Izo does clip you, he will do a fair amount of damage. Don't hesitate to use a healing item.

Once you are ready, talk to Takechi to progress the story. Once again, make sure you have some healing items in your inventory. Things are about to get bumpy.

Confrontation At The Castle

Like A Dragon Ishin, Chapter 1, Ryoma fighting the shadowy assassin

After a brief cutscene, tragedy will befall your family. You will now need to escape the castle. You are going to be fighting groups of enemies, so your best recourse is to use the brawler style, as it has a Heat Action that is particularly good at clearing out multiple enemies.

Just use your quick attack followed by a heavy attack to knock an enemy onto their back. Then, perform your Heat Action while standing in front of their feet. This will swing them around🧔, hitting nearby enemies.

Like A Dragon Ishin, Chapter 1, Ryoma using his Giant Swing Heat Action

After clearing the first room, break down the wall, grab the Precious Steel, and move down the stairs. After fighting your way through a few waves of goons, you will encounter one blocking the hallway exit. Switch to your gun and shoot them from a distance. Now, a group of gunmen will take aim at you and a QTE will play out. In this next area, there will be a number of swordsmen. Keep using that heat action to take them all out. But before you move on, make sure you grab the two Precious Steels and the Ronin's Hair Tie in the nearby storerooms. You will now fight your way through a narrow hallway. Us𓃲e your Heat Action to clear the guards out. At the end of the hallways, there will be a guard blocking the exit. Shoot the♉m.

Kick down the door, and you will fight an armored swordsman. The game suggests you stick with one of your sword styles in order to remove their armor. However, the armored soldier is very easy to parry with the Brawler stance. So, parry their slow attacks, then, when you are facing their back, switch to your Swordsman style and slash his back. Kick down the next door, go up the stairs, and take out all the samurai in this room, but before you break through the door and leave, grab the crystal in the back. You will now be able to exit the castle.

Masked Man Boss Fight

Like A Dragon Ishin, Chapter 1, A ninja striking a combat pose

Sorry, Izo, but the Masked Man is the first REAL boss in Ishin. He is pretty tough. You will want to circle when he thrusts. However, watch out, he has a spinning sword attack that hits behind him. So, if you do circle him, and you see him use this technique, keep a little distance before you lunge in. While his attacks are not particularly hard to see coming, they do hit for a ton of damage. Itও is 🐓important to take your time here and not rush in.

Like A Dragon Ishin, Chapter 1, Preparing to strike the Ninja in the back after dodging their slash

You can use the brawler style here to take advantage of those telegraphed sword swings with your parry, but the ninja can't be grabbed, and your punches are far less damaging. Truth be told, dodging around to their backside is more than effective enough, so we would recommend just sticking with that.

If you are feeling fancy, you can parry the Masked Man's attacks, then switch to the swordsman stance and hit him from behind. The best of both worlds! However, if you miss your parry, you are going to eat a lot of damage.

Like A Dragon Ishin, Chapter 1, An Example of the Ninja's thrusting attack

You don't want to face the Masked Man head-on. Instead, play defensively, and try to keep your distance. This boss is at their most vulnerable when they string together thrusting sword attacks. This is the perfect opportunity for you to dodge around them and hit them in the back, as they don't follow that thrusting attack with the wide slash that hits behind them. So, keep an eye peeled for those sword thrusts. Once you get the Masked Man to half health, they will flee, and the only thing left for you to do is to watch some cutscenes.
