Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii - Pirates' Coliseum Tournament Of Captains Guide
🔯Take on the best of the best in Madl🐼antis' toughest battles.
The Tournament of Captains combines the battle types of Quick Clash with the grueling gauntlet ofꦐ rounds in Madlantis Mania, pitting you against multiple pirate crews in back-to-back battles, with more fights stacked up in later ranks. Beating ranks in the Tournament of Captains is also required to gain access to more difficult battles in Quick Clash and Madlantis Mania.
What Is The Tournament Of Captains?
Once you've honed your skills in Naval and Boarding Battles, you can take your combined knowledge into the Tournament of Captains (ToC), which puts you in multi-round fights that include both types of combat – cannon and board💛ing.
Unlike Quick Clash and Madlantis Mania, there are far fewer tournaments to challenge, with each subsequent challenge only available once you've beaten the ranked battle that precedes it.
The Tournament of Captains fights also serve as rites of passage into the upper tiers of the Quick Clash and Madlantis Mania fights, as you'll need to complete through rank two of the Tournameღnt of Captains to unlock the rank three Madlantis and Quick Clash challenges.
In addition to defeating the previous ToC battle to unlock each challenge in the Tournament of Captains, your Pirate Reputation rank must equal or exceed the rank you wish to challenge. So, if you want to face the Tournament of Captains Rank Three, you must beat the three previous tournaments and have a Rank Three Pirate Reputation or above.
In addition to these stipulations, the second Rank Three battle in the Tournament of Captains is only available once you've garnered interest from Commodore Mortimer by advancing the main story.
If you're diving straight into the Tourna🍸ment of Captains after unlocking access to the Pirates' Coliseum, you should aim to achieve an S-rank in every available fight in Quick Clash and Madlantis Mania before you proceed to the third challenge.
However, you should increase your pirate reputation outside the Coliseum by advancing the main story and findin🦹g treasures across the sea, as y🎉ou can only earn reputation points the first time you complete a given battle.
How To Prepare For The Tournament Of Captains
The following squad compositions (once leveled up in Quick Clash and Madlantis Mania) should p꧋rovide enough firepower to beat the first few Tournament of Captains ranks.

Before you dive into the🍸se fights, consider the following🌞 upgrades to your vessel to have the best chance of success in these grueling encounters:
- Increase the size of your boarding squad at least once, preferably maxing it out before the rank four and five battles.
- Unlock at least one extra rank of Additional Repairs, Fuel Tank Increase, and Additional Smoke Screens.
- Upgrade your ship's durability through the first rank of Durability Boost Plus after maxing out the first Durability Boost. You'll know you're done when the next upgrade costs $3,000.
- Unlock both Additional Starboard and Port Cannons.
- Maximize your Gatling Gun or Frost Machine Gun upgrades, depending on whether you prefer setting enemies on fire or freezing them.
-
Purchase an Energy Cannon on either your Port or Starboard side to start, both once you reach the latter battles.
- Purchase at least a level one flamethrower or level three cannon on your opposite side if you cannot afford two Energy Cannons.
- Rocket Launchers are optional, but can help do major damage.
While certain upgrades, like the Smoke Screen upgrade, aren't strictly required, they will help make these fights far more manageable, so you don't have to re💛ly on luck or perfect play to finish each.
If you're short on crew members, a few are standing around Pirates' Coliseum that will join you aft𝔉er you've defeated the Tagger Pirates (Monica), Grey Pirates (Steve), and Beginner Mania (Robson Caetano di Sciuva).
These pirate✤s should help fill out yourꦜ Boarding Squad.
How To Win In The Tournament Of Captains
Unlike Madlantis Mania, theꦡ Tournament of Captains will level up everyone onboard, from the First Mate to your Boa🐈rding Squad.
As such, filling out your boarding crew by Ranks Two and Three is a great idea to help round out the strength of your crew and give you an edge in the tougher boarding battles. With your crew prepared, your primary focus should be on depl🅠eting the boss ship's HP as fast as possible, since you only need to defeat the boss ship toꦯ begin the boarding phase.
To quickly whittle downꦆ a boss ship's HP, follow this pattern:
- Open with direct Machine Gun fire from a distance as you approach.
- Ram the boss ship, then avoid its cannon fire using your speed boosts, returning cannon fire if possible.
- Turn and drift to get behind the boss ship.
- Continue to deal damage using your Machine Guns while pursuing, then accelerate and pull up alongside the boss to hit them with your powerful cannons.
- Repeat until the boss ship is down, taking time to repair your ship if you sustained too much damage.
Completing these battles quickly will award significant chunks of pirate reputation with each victory, so upgrade Majima's Sea Dog Style to effectively whittl𒐪e down your opponents during the challenging boarding ওbattles.
The faster you complete each battle, the bigger the bonuses you will earn from this mode, with rank three awarding around 15 million dolla🌞rs for an S-Rank completion.
Attack large groups to open the boarding phase, then make a beeline for the officers and captains to prevent them from unleashing their special skills. Don't forget to hit up on the d-pad to use your support skills and rely on Majima's Chain Hook to cut the distance between you and the enemy crew. This will help you achieve more consistent S-ranks.
If you fail a run or miss out on an S-rank at the hardest rank you can challenge, then head back to the first rank or two to gain extra experience and money to upgrade❀ the areℱas you're struggling in.
