Nobody asked it to, but 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Limited Run Games has announced it will be bringing back a number of dormant franchises as a part of its publishing arm. Last night saw the gaming world inundated with announcements that would work perfectly within an unpredictable fever dream. El Shaddai is coming back? That’s cool, I don’t think enough people played that thing back in the day. Tomba as well? That’s amazing, it’s an underrated banger lost to the early days of 3D platforming. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:A Gex remaster? All three of them?! **** off.
It wasn’t a bad trip, this is really happening. At first I wasn’t sure what to think about the likes of Gex and Tomba making a comeback, but the more I think about it the more excited I am. Originally released on the likes of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:PlayStation and 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Nintendo 64, back before we lost it to history, the foul-mouthed gecko loved to make outdated pop culture references, sex up fellow secret agents, and do battle with an evil robot spread across the television multiverse. That concept is still absurd, and alll we know is that all three games will be broug🔯ht back to life using LRG’s own ‘Carbon Engine’, so I can’t help but think about what a remake would entail.
Part of me wants the original Gex, Deep Cover Gecko, and Enter The Gecko’s pop culture references to remain unsullied. Imagine a 2024🍌 platformer awkwardly referencing ꧒the OJ Simpson car chase, or classic episodes of Seinfeld like either of those things are still at all relevant.
Gex is famously cringe, and was a cross-media experiment ♓in video games before such a thing really existed. Each new level was intended to be a television show or well-known network, with our titular hero collecting remotes by ༺completing different missions or objectives. I remember it fondly, but going back I can’t imagine these games have aged incredibly well. While that sounds like a reason to give it a new coat of paint and timely references to Succession, it should do the absolute opposite. They shouldn’t change any of the writing material, so it feels as weird and wonderful as it always has.
Gex should still be a leering pervert who knows karate and loves junk food, because it’s a time capsule into how we saw anything ‘meta’ in the ‘90s. How it would even translate these cultural references into the modern day without becoming even worse confounds me. Do levels about The Godfather suddenly morph into boxing matches with Logan Paul and KSI? When you modernise Gex, you lose a lot of its enduring charm. It goes from cringe-but-kitsch🔯 to just plain bad.
Wayforward is also taking on Clock Tower, the classic survival horror franchise which hasn’t seen a new entry in years. Better yet, the visual style and gameplay are being modernised in a way that keeps its distinct atmosphere and mechanics intact. I’m now picturing a charming horr🐷or outing with the visual brilliance of Shantae or River City Girls, which is something that we haven’t really seen before. Jurassic Park,
Gargoyles, Colossal Cave, and Castlevania all help round out a selection of announcements that aren’t just about nostalgia, but a continued importance to preserve the medium through re-releases and remasters that aren’t scared to remind us of forgotten classiꦰcs we might have otherwise lost completely. It’s amazing to see.
