As I've made my way through Doom: The Dark Ages, I've found myself relating to one of its recurring enemies in the same way, even though it's categorized as "Heavy". The Pinky Rider first shows up early on in the game and, when you first meet it, it's a boss you need to put ꦿdown. As a result, you learn how to handle it, first taking out the demon on top, then the steed-like beast beneath while parrying its plasma arrow attack. It's not especially tough, but it does force you to engage with the give-and-take, best-offense-is-a-good-defense mechanics you'll continue to use throughout the game.

But as the rest of the enemies you face get more and more difficult, the Pinky rider becomes a welcome sight. When I'm in the middle of an all-out brawl and I notice the Pinky rider shooting one of those plasma arrows my way, I feel a sense of calm. I might have a tough time taking down the giant lizard with a chainsaw arm currently running amok, but I know I can take the Pinky rider.

I know that, if I don't fight back, the Pinky rider will kill me just like any of its big brothers and sisters. But it's like a one seed getting matched up with a six seed in March Madness. Sure, you could lose. But if you're awake, you'll probably w✱in. The Pinky rider is an opponent you know you can beat. And in a game like Doom: The Dark Ages, that's as close to a friend as the Doom Slayer can get.
