The surprise release of Mafia 2: Definitive Edition this past week was likely kept under wraps for a very important reason: it's kind of a h✤ot mess.🎃 After fans got their hands on the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the port and began playing, many started to encounter a plethora of bugs and glitches that weren't there before. It's the kind of stuff that makes you question just what happened during the development process.
A quick search on YouTube brings up a ton of videos of (welcome back, Assassin's Creed Unity), cars and players , and even bugged out special effects that drop the framerate into the single digits. The PS4 version appears to be suffering from more b꧅ugs, but neither console port is free of issues.
On the PC side o⛎f things, the game is mostly fine. The biggest issue is more the file size has quadrupled over the original version, clocking in aꦉt 45 GB vs. the 7 GB of the 2010 release. You do get some higher resolution textures, but it's not a night and day transformation. This is mainly the same release with 4K UI elements.
It should be noted that any open-world game is going to have some kind of glitches. Because of the complex nature of their simulated systems, the engines powering these games will sometimes break in humorous ways. What's more troubling is that the glitches present in this new remaster were not in the original version of Mafia 2.
Mafia 2 wasn't free from bugs, but it mostly worked properly on PC and Xbox 360 (the PS3 version is a different story). You could play the game from start to finish and rarely encounter major technological problems. For Definitive Edition, it appears as if 2K didn't give developer D3t enꦓough time or money to properly touch up this game.
At $30, that's a bit much to ask for a 10-year-old game with new problems. 2K hasn't spoken to these issues yet, 🍸either, so there's not even a guarantee that the port will be fixed. The PC version includes it alongside the original, so at least a p💙urchase there will guarantee you a working copy, though probably not the one 2K wants you playing.
