Often regarded for their islandwalking capabilities and numerous "lords," merfolk has long been one of the most iconic tribes within blue's color identity. While Merfolk are most often played in formats such as Modern, they still possess a home in the much-loved Commander format.

So we're going to talk about the best that everyone's favorite sea-dwelling tribe has to offer in the Commander format, ranging from artifacts, creatures, and potential Merfolk commanders. Without further ado, we present our top strongest cards for a Merfolk Tribal Commander Deck!

As Merfolk are a classic tribe synonymous with blue mana, it should be no surprise that as new sets are released, like many other tribes, Merfolk decks are provided access to powerful new card options that can be added to pre-existing Merfolk decks or even inspire brand new Merfolk-Tribal decks. So today, we're going to examine various new cards printed over the past few years that are perfect for any Merfolk-Tribal Commander deck.

15 💫 Tide Shaper ꧋

Tide Shaper is an underrated merfolk that was introduced in Modern Horzions 2, enabling one of the most common Merfolk-Tribal win conditions. For one mana, Tide Shaper is a 1/1 merfolk wizard that gets +1/+1 as long as an opponent controls an island, often allowing it to be cast as a one-mana 2/2. Additionally, Tide Shaper has a kicker cost of one that if paid, causes target land to become an island for as long as Tide Shaper remains in play. Not only can this be used to interfere with an opponent's mana base, as this island can force an island upon a player, it can enable the islandwalk ability, a common win condition for the tribe.

14 🎃 ༺ Reflections Of Littjara

A Blue five-mana enchantment printed in Kaldheim, Reflections of Littjara is capable of providing incredible power for a Merfolk-Tribal player. Upon entering the battlefield, this enchantment's controller chooses a creature type.

Whenever its controller casts a spell of that type, they copy it, with copies of creature spells entering the battlefield as a token. Once in play, this enchantment causes every merfolk its controller would cast to provide twice as much value as it would normally, allowing for overwhelming board states to be amassed if one's opponents can't remove Reflections of Littjara.

13 💟 Thieving Skydiver

For the low cost of two mana, Thieving Skydiver is among the most flexible and potent Merfolk to see print in the past few years. A 2/1 with flying and a kicker cost of X, once it enters the battlefield, if its kicker cost was paid, its controller can gain control of an artifact with a mana value of X. As the Commander format is rife with low-mana artifacts that can provide early game value such as Sol Ring and Arcane Signet, Thieving Skydiver can deprive opponents of the value of their mana rocks, gaining them for one's self.

12 ꩲ Svyelun Of Sea And Sky

Svyelun of🌳 Sea and Sky is an excellent new option for a Merfolk Tribal commander, also serving well within th𒆙e 99 of any other type of Merfolk-Tribal deck. For a mere three mana, Svyelun is a 3/4 merfolk god that has indestructible as long as its owner controls two or more other merfolk.

Hard to remove from play, upon attacking, Svyelun allows its controller to draw a card, making it a consistent source of additional card draw. While Svyelun is able to protect itself through its indestructibility, it even offers some coverage for its controller's other merfolk, providing all other merfolk its owner controls with Ward 1.

11 𓆉 Wanderwine Prophets

It's no secret that taking extra turns in Magic is incredibly powerful. Wanderwine Prophets is a potent Merfolk-Tribal cards that allows a player to convert their merfolk into extra turns. A 4/4 merfolk wizard that requires its controller to champion a merfolk, whenever this creature deals damage to a player, its controller can sacrifice a merfolk to take an extra turn after this one. If this creature's controller can prevent it from being blocked and can put at least one merfolk into play each turn, it can effectively be used to chain countless turns together, winning the game for its controller.

10 Slinn Voda, The Rising Deep 𓃲

Cyclonic Rift is often regarded as not just one of the strongest board-wipes in Commander, but one of the strongest blue cards at players' disposal. It's ability to one-sidedly bounce the board states of your opponents is not an effect to take lightly. While slightly more mana-intensive than the aforementioned Cyclonic Rift, the Legendary Leviathan, Slynn Voda, the Rising Deep functions very similarly to a Cyclonic Rift.

Upon entering the battlefield, as long as its kicker cost was paid, Slinn Voda bounces all creatures to their opponent's hands except for nautical creature types such as octopuses and Merfolk. While not as powerful as Cylconic Rift, Slinn Voda can often serve as a second copy the Rift, that can only be effectively accessed by Merfolk tribal decks.

9 Aquitect's Will

Though one of the strengths of Merfolk is their ability to deal direct damage through the use of Islandwalk, a large portion of decks you'll be playing against won't be playing islands. That's where Aquitect's Will comes in. For the low cost of one blue mana, Aquitect's Will is a sorcery that puts a flood counter on a land of your choice, turning it into an island.

This is a very cheap and effective way of turning on each of your creatures with islandwalk and letting your merfolk through your opponents' defenses unopposed. The spell also has the added benefit of replacing itself by drawing you a card when it is cast as long as you control at least one merfolk, letting it still maintain its usefulness over the course of a game.

8 Deeproot Wate♏rs 🐈

Reminiscent of the elf tribal staple, Lys♏ Alana Huntmaster, which creates a 1/1 elf token whenever its controller casts an elf spell, Deeproot Waters is a merfolk-centric enchantment with a similar ability. For three mana, Deeproot Waters creates a 1/1 merfolk token whenever you c🌳ast a merfolk spell.

However, unlike other token generators found within other tribes like elvܫes, these are not simply vanilla tokens with no abilities. The tokens that Deeproot Waters creates possess hexproof, making them much harder for you opponents to deal with, especially if you were to buff these tokens with the abilities of your other merfolk.

7 Master Of The Pearl 𒁏Trident 💜

We've previously mentioned merfolk's abilities to buff others within their ranks. Master of the Pearl Trident is a perfect example of such an ability on a merfolk. For the impressively low cost of two blue mana, Master of the Pearl Trident is a creature that provides all other merfolk you control with +1/+1 and Island walk.

This not only buffs the damage capabilities and survivability of your merfolk, but it also allows them to mo🧸re easily deal damage without being intercepted by blockers.

6 👍 Quicksilver Fountain

A three-mana artifact, Quicksilver Fountain is effectively a suped-up and repeatable version of Aquitect's Will. Causing players to turn one of their non-island lands into an island each turn in the form of flood counters, Quicksilver Fountain enables your merfolk with islandwalk across the entire board while also slowly interfering with the mana of any of your opponents who aren't playing blue.

Just watch out for Quicksilver Fountain's second ability, which will remove all flood counters from all lands in play if each land in play has become an island.
