In D&D, your player character always chooses a background to represent previous life experiences before they became an adventurer. The choice means much the same for your commander in Battle For Baldur's Gate, with the difference being that backgrounds can only be paired with Commanders who feature the "Choose a Background" card text. All said, there are over 1000 different pairings available between the cards released in this set. Since that's way too many for any player to look through, we'll happily shorten your list to the best combinations we've found.
Updated by Chris Stomberg on November 15, 2022: As players have continued to experiment with this newly introduced Commander mechanic, more high power combinations between Commanders and backgrounds have been discovered. Looking at the success of Magic: The Gathering's crossover product releases, it's safe to assume that even more strong pairings will become available in the future. While those presented here are the best that have been found so far, it's worth considering whether the background or the Commander is doing the heavy lifting. This might just result in you discovering a powerful pairing of your own, especially when more versions of this cool mechanic are released.
10 Lae'zel, Vlaakith's Champion and Master Chef
This is a rather straightforward background commander pairing that results in a counters matter deck where you get to place a minimum of two counters on each creature that enters the battlefield, as long as you control Lae'zel, Vlaakith's Champion. At a very manageable converted mana cost of two generic and one white, it's easy to repeatedly play Lae'zel onto the battlefield, even if she is answered with removal.
This is a deck that will either go off big and drown opponents in counters or fizzle out due to being faced with too much interaction. It's worth noting that you will need to present a critical mass of counters using cards like Hardened Scales, Verdurous Gearhulk, The Ozolith, and Walking Ballista. 9 Rassad yn Ba🦩shir and Candlekeep𝔉 Sage
These two cards might not appear like a proper background commander pair at first glance, but the blink Commander archetype has been solidly identified as belonging to the UW (blue/white) color pair for a very long time now. As a result, even though Rasaad doesn't offer any blink ability of his own, pairing him with Candlekeep Sage allows you to take advantage of a whole slew of blink cards in order to provide your deck with a reliable draw engine, thanks to Candlekeep Sage.
Additionally, Rasaa🙈d has the added benefit of making cards like Charix, the Raging Isle, potentially game-ending threats while also buffing blink targets that happen to have high toughness, like Aarakocra Sne♊ak. At the end of the day, this Commander pairing offers something new to a well-established Commander archetype by providing a defender or high toughness sub-theme.
8 Sarevok, Dea🌠thbringer and Criminal Past
Sarevok, Deathbringer punishes opponents for failing to remove permanents from the battlefield by threatening their life total. The nice thing about this commander is that it doesn't have to enter combat in order to leave a mark, and it equally pressures all opposing players in the game. While losing three life may seem like a meager amount in comparison to the 40 each player starts with, that's where our background comes into play.
Criminal Past provides Sarevok with much more power than he should ever rightly have access to for the simple cost of putting creatures into the graveyard. Thankfully, black is the perfect color for doing exactly that. This commander background pairing fits well with any 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:reanimator themed deck, though it does notably restrict your access to only black cards. Nevertheless, Sarevok's ability is likely to keep the pressure on your opponents whilst you fill your own graveyard with monsters to later return to the battlefield.
7 🦩 Renari, Merchant of Marvels and Acolyte of Bahamut

Renari, Merchant of Marvels provides all of your Dragon creature cards with the useful keyword flash, which allows you to cast your Dragons at instant speed. One of the best ways to protect powerful creatures like Dragons and ensure you get some value out of them with at least one combat phase is by casting them at instant speed, so Renari makes a great choice for 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:a Dragon commander.
Furthermore, the Acolyte of Bahamut background makes it so that each Dragon you cast on a turn costs two generic mana less. This is a huge boon for playing more powerful creatures. Most importantly, the discount applies to one Dragon you cast each turn, which means, thanks to Renari giving our Dragons flash, you can now cast a Dragon on each of your opponent's turns as well as your own for a much cheaper cost.
6 🍬 Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer and Raised by Giants

Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer comes with the powerful ability to goad (force them to attack) all creatures opponents control as long as the🌳y have less power than him. Sadly, Baeloth starts off w💜ith a meager two power, meaning only the lowliest of creatures will fall for his tricks.
However, by providing Baeloth with the Raised by Giants background, his power increases to ten. This allows Baeloth to goad just about any creature your opponents could lay down which makes a huge difference. Furthermore, since Baeloth forces all of your opponent's creatures to attack, he then leaves them wide open to swing in for ten damage himself, potentially knocking an opponent out through commander damage. Now that's some grade-A entertainment.
5 Karlach, Fury of Avernus 🃏and Guild Artisan
An additional combat phase is difficult for any combat enthusiast to pass up, but Karlach, Fury of Avernus makes the prospect even more tantalizing. On top of providing an additional combat ꦓphase trigger all on her own, Karlach also rewards attacking creatures with first strike during their second attack.
Pair Karlach with the Guild Artis♎an background and your combat steps become even more absurd. Thanks to Karlach, Fury of Avernus attacking twice every turn, Guild Artisan supplies you with four Treasure tokens to spend as you like. For instance, you could use them to slam down an Emrakul, The Promised End a bit earlier than anyone is prepared for. Whoopsies.
4 Livaan, Cultist of Tiamꦐat and Dragon Cultist ꦫ
Livaan, Cultist of Tiamat doesn't seem all that menacing upon first glance. After all, if you're casting noncreature spells all the time in order to trigger her effect, it's going to be hard to keep any creatures on the battlefield. Thankfully, red has access to all kinds of noncreature token generators like Dragon Fodder, Goblin Assault, Goblin War Party, and more.
By pairing Livaan with the Dragon Cultist ba🅘ckground, you can assure the creation of a powerful Dragon token just about every turn. Just continue𝔉 to generate tokens other tokens, provide one with increased attack from Livaan, and swinging in with it to deal five damage.
3 Ganax, Ast🐬ral Hunter and ꦏHaunted One
Dragon tokens are fun and all, but most players interested in Dragons want some Dragon 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:creature types that are a lot more flavorful than a bunch of textless tokens. That's where Ganax, Astral Hunter serves as a proper Dragon tribal Commander. Ganax's well-flavored ability allows you to generate tons of Treasure tokens simply by casting Dragons, which will no doubt lead to casting even more Dragons.
Pair Ganax with the Haunted One background and you'll end up with the ability to cast even more Dragons, and this time for free. As long as Ganax is tapped, any Dragon you control gains the undying keyword, which means if it dies with no counters on it, it then returns to the battlefield with an additional +1/+1 counter on it. Since you'll be casting Dragons repeatedly, the best kinds for a deck like this are ones with powerful enter the battlefield effects, like Thunder Dragon.
2 Wyll, Blade of Front💎iers and Sword Coast Sailor 𒉰
Anyone who is interested in a Dungeons & Dragons-themed set had better be ready to roll some dice. Wyll, Blade of Frontiers ensures that you'll roll twice as many and pick the highest. In D&D, this is colloquially referred to as rolling with advantage.
Sadly, Wyll's hardly much of a threat until you've rolled a fair number of dice. But with the Sword Coast Sailor background, Wyll can attack with reckless abandon as long as he's aiming for the player with the highest life total, as it makes Wyll unblockable. Avast, ye swabs! These dice won't be rolling themselves now, will they?
1 Gale, Waterdeep Prodigy and Scion of Halaster ജ 🀅
For Magic players who prefer to cast nonpermanent spells like sorceries and instants, Gale, Waterdeep Prodigy makes a perfect commander. As long as you have Gale on the battlefield and cast an instant or sorcery, you can then cast whichever nonpermanent card type you didn't already cast from your graveyard. For example, if you cast a sorcery with Gale on the battlefield, you can now cast an instant from your graveyard this turn as well.
Alongside the Scion of Halaster background, Gale becomes a formidable source of card advantage. This background allows you to look at the top two cards of ♓your deck and put one into your graveyard, providing you with the means to put a sorcery or instant into your graveyard. Talk about a steal.
