It's a bizarre collection of themes, but after nearly 100 expansions, Magic is a wild collection of ideas.

Ixalan's Dinosaurs and Vampire Conqui🅘stadors are back in M🌊agic: The Gathering's latest set.

It's also got a lot of mechanics that few players could ever hope to memorize. One of the returning mechanics is "explore," which sends a creature on a journey of discovery that either finds land for you or power for your critter. If you're looking for a thorough explanation of how to explore in Magic, then here's where to start your own personal journey of discovery.

What Is Explore?

Explore was a mechanic introduced in the original Ixalan expansion way back in 2017. It's shown up a few times since then--most notably in the recent 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Doctor Who Universes Beyond expansion--but it's largely stuck to the Ixalan-themed sets.

To explore, you'll need to have a creature that can go on a journey and some card that causes it to explore (e🌠ither as part of a spell effect, or an activated or triggered a💜bility).

Here's the full reminder text for the explore keyword: "Reveal the top card of your library. Put that card into your hand if it's a land. Otherwise, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature, then put the card back on top or into your graveyard."

Rules For Explore

The Core by Piotr Dura

There are a few things to remember for explore. First, there's no way to interrupt an exploration once it happens. You can decide to destroy the creature in response to an explor🐻a꧃tion, but the effects of explore will still occur.

A creature has to be around to activate explore, but it doesn't need to be there for explore to resolve. Thisಞ means you can activat😼e an explore ability, your opponent can respond by killing your creature, but it will still go on an exploration.

However, if the creature has already left the battlefield before explore resolves, you won't be able to give it any +1/+1 counters if you reveal a non-land card. You'll still put that non-land card either into your graveyard or back on top of your library, though.

Explore uses the stack, but the individual effects of explore are all resolved at once. This means opponents can't decide to Lightning Bolt your 3/3 creature if you reveal a non-land card. The Lightning Bolt would have to be announced in response to the explore to go on the stack, which would kill the 3/3 creature and prevent any +1/+1 from being placed, but the rest of the explore effects would still take place.

What’s New For Explore In Caverns of Ixalan

MTG - Map Token

In the original Ixalan, explore would happen as part of a spell effect or activated/triggered ability, but in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, explore will mostly happen thanks to the all-new Map token.

Like Food, Treasure, and Clue tokens, Map tokens are colorless artifacts with 0 casting cost that are often generated as part of a spell effect or activated/triggered ability. To activate a Map, you'll need to pay one colorless mana, tap the token, and then sacrifice it. A creature is then instructed to explore.

Map tokens can only be activated as a sorcery.

There are quite a few cards in the Lost Caverns of Ixalan that generate Map tokens, which offers plenty of synergies for artifact-themed decks. Take a look at the Blue/Green Commander deck, Explorers of the Deep, to get an idea of how Map tokens༺ and the explore mechanic can work in Lost Caverns of Ixalan.
