Named after the card Fog, ‘fog effects’ are any card that prevents combat damage this turn. Fog, Spore Frog, Holy Day, Undergrowth, and Moment’s Peace all do the same thing – and by preven🗹ting combat damage, you’re also preventing infect and toxic from putting counters on you.
You can still have poison counters put on you in other ways though, most notably through frequent proliferation. 🍎Proliferating is a very slo🅺w way of winning through poison counters, but it still does the job if you don’t take your opponent down quick enough.

Karn, Liberated is one of only two cards that can completely remove poison counters you’ve already picked u🐈p. This is thanks to its ultimate -14 ability, which outright restarts the game. Poison decks tend to rely on ramming as many counters on you as possible in a turn, and speeไding it up even further with proliferation. By limiting the number of counters you can get each turn to just one, you’re turning off almost their entire strateg💜y, and giving yourself breathing room to take them out first.
6 Melira, Sylvok Outcast 🙈 ♔
The older version of Melira is much, much better than the Living Cure. Sylvok Outcast doesn’t just slow things down, it comꦿpletely prevents you from gaining poison counters and turns off infect altogether.
Just two mana for Melira 🍌is wild, and it’s mono-green which is crucial for the Commander format. However, with no protection of her own, she’ll be a lightning rod for removal. You’ll want ways to either recur her from your graveyard, or find ways to protect her once she’s in play, as your opponent will be entirely focused on killing her to ensure their poison can do its thing.
5 Leeches
Joining Karn as the second of the two cards that can outright remove poison is leeches. Debuting back in Homelands, way before infect made poison so scary, Leeches lets you effectively trade life in exchange for rem𝄹oving poison.
It’s tough to imagine a time when Leeches wouldn’t be worth it. Paying a maximum of nine life to save yourself f𒐪rom poison would always be worth it, especially in formats like Commander where you have so much life to work with anyway.
In one-on-one f🌃ormats it’s a bit of a harder sell, but if you’re about to lose to poison, taking a bit hit to your life to regain your position in the game would generally still be the right mo♔ve.
4 ♑ Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider
Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider is a rare card that works not j🥀ust when countering the poison player, but helps you out if you yourself are hoping to win that way.
For countering poison, Vorinclex halves and round🌠s down the number of counters your opponents would place. If they tried to put just one counter on you, it would instead round down to zero and be completely useless. Larger sources of poison might still get through, but it still doubles the effort your opponent will need to put in to win.
3 Solemnity
White has one of the most 🔯complete anti-poison tools possible, with Hour of Devastation’s Sole🗹mnity. Not only does this prevent your opponent from putting counters on you, it also stops infect’s -1/-1 counters, and stops a lot of the oil counter shenanigans introduced in Phyrexia: All Will Be One.

You should also make use of counterspells if they’re available to you, as you’ll want to slow down how often your opponent can proliferate.
