Jace Beleren is one of the earliest Planeswalkers shown in the form of a card. He's a member of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Magic: The Gathering's Lorwyn Five, when Planeswalker cards were first released. He has a very storied history across MTG's history, being one of the Planeswalkers with the most cards released.
Jace is centered exclusively in blue mana, a trait only shared by one other Planeswalker (Mu Yanling). Jace is a mind mage, capable of altering the minds of others, including completely erasing memories from one's mind. He can also create illusions, using his intellect and magic to become a formidable strategist. But who is he? We take a deep look.
Updated February 10, 2023 by Johnny Garcia: Jace Beleren has long been one of the most storied characters in Magic: The Gathering's history. This continues with the events of Phyrexia: All Will Be One where he leads a strike team of Planeswalkers to New Phyrexia to destroy them before they can infiltrate all corners of the Multiverse. Like his last assault with the Gatewatch, it goes poorly when the Phyrexian forces are aware of their arrival, and they all struggle with being split up on such a dangerous Plane.
Early Life And Spark
Jace Beleren was born on the Plane of Vryn. His powers were unlocked at a very early age — something his parents were ashamed of, so Jace was taken to the sphinx mage Alhammarret to train under him. Alhammarret used Jace as an agent to gather information, using his power of illusion to sneak into enemy lines a⛎nd gather intel to bring back to the sphinx.
One day, Jace attempted to enter Alhammarret's mind, and the sheer power inside of it caused Jace's Planeswalker spark to ignite. Despite this, Alhammaret was able to erase the memories of the event. However, Jace discovered that Alhammaret was playing both sides of conflicting factions, erasing Jace's memories to keep his secret safe. He then began to keep his information on paper and erase his own knowledge of what he saw.
Jace eventually had a full confrontation with Alhammaret, where the two began a duel. They both used their powers of telepathy, with Jace ultimately winning at the cost of his own memories. The aftermath of the fight caused Jace to mistakenly planeswalk away to the Plane of Ravnica.
The Infinite Consortium
Jace made his home in Ravnica, using his telepathy to blackmail the elite in order to live a comfortable life for himself. Eventually, he began to be attacked by members of the Infinite Consortium, a group🐻 of collectors using Planeswalkers to gather artifacts from any Plane.
This led to a meeting with the leader of the Infinite Consortium and fellow Planeswalker Tezzeret, who wanted to invite Jace to the group, something he reluctantly agreed to. One of his jobs was to acquire a Dragon Scroll from the Planeswalker Chandra and return it to its home in the Plane Kephalai. He was successful a𒀰nd erased the memories of it from her minꦦd.
Jace began to feel guilt over the brutal actions of the Infinite Consortium, including a horrible massacre on Kamigawa of a Nezumi village. Jace was punished for failing in any mission by Tezzeret, who beat him. The Planeswalker Nicol Bolas, the original leader of t💮he Infinite Consortium, invited Tezzeret to a meeting, and Jace was brought along. They failed to attack the dragon, and Tezzeret tortured Jace for his failure.
Jace managed to flee from Tezzeret and the Infinite Consortium, running into the Planeswalker Liliana Vess, who helped protect them. In desperation, Jace turned to Nicol Bolas to help in finding Tezzeret's base. Jace and Liliana assaulted the base, but failed, and Jace was tortured and captured. Liliana freed him, and Jace and Tezzeret faced off in a duel. He was able to defeat Tezzeret and erased his memories, leaving the Infinite Consortium without a leader.
The Living Guildpact
After the fall of the Consortium, Jace simply wandered through Ravnica as a regular citizen. However, he began to notice patterns popping up all around the Plane, and wanting to forget the things he saw, he decided to investigate them as a distraction. He sought out a vedalken named Kavin, and the two worked together to discover what the patterns meant. The Izzet League of Ravnica was especially interested in them.
Their investigation caught the attention of both the Selesnya Conclave and House Dimir. Jace tracked the Planeswalker and Izzet League member Ral Zarek back to the Izzet Guildgate, where he witnessed the dragon Niv-Mizzet waiting. Jace made a connection with the dragon and discovered the answers to the symbols, but Niv-Mizzet became aware of Jace's actions.
Returning to Kavin, he insisted that they walk away before their lives were endangered. Jace reluctantly agreed and began to erase his memories of the event. An ally and friend, Emmara, was taken by the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Cult Of Rakdos, and Jace gave chase to try and help her. His only clue led him to a Rakdos nightclub, but he had to flee into a Golgari neighborhood.
He was attacked by the vampire Varolz, but was saved by Emmara, and the two reunited. Jace returned Emmara to Selesnya territory, and while she was welcomed, they were skeptical about Jace. He tried and failed to read into Emmara's lover Captain Calomir, and was thrown out after he said he wasn't who he said he was.
Jace worried for his friend and thought Emmara was in danger. He sought out Lavinia of the Azorius to try and gain information about the memories he made himself forget in exchange for information about the plots the guilds were weaving. However, she denied giving the information, leading to Jace seeking out Ruric Thar, a member of the Gruul he had hired prior. The two engaged in 🥀combat, and when Jace came out victorious he was given permission to enter his mind. The Cult Of Rakdos ambushed them, but Jace was able to disperse them by summoning an illusion of Rakdos to command them back to their home𓃲s.
Selesnya troops were waiting upon Jace's return to the town, catching him off-guard. Rakdos member Exava was able to ambush him, interrupted when Niv-Mizzet made an announcement about the Implicit Maze, the source of the secrets he had spent so long seeking. Exava was set to attack, but Jace was saved by Dimir member Lazav. Afterward, Jace was thrown in a Dimir prison, where they attempted to harvest the map of the maze from Jace's mind. They were successful, and he planeswalked away to Zendikar to escape.
He briefly considered leaving Ravnica behind, but his concern for Emmara was too strong to ignore. He traveled to the Implicit Maze's endpoint where he met the Bailiff, who was bound to the maze. He told Jace that if no Guildpact was formed by the completion of the maze, the Supreme Verdict of Azor wouཧld be enacted, which would decimate all those who were guilty in a district of Ravnica.
Jace reconnected with Emmara and told her everything he had discovered. They worked together, crossing the Selesnya and Golgari gates, before Jace was arrested at the Azorius gate for his previous crimes. Jace told them everything he knew and pleaded guilty in order to hurry the trial along and get back to the maze. His sentence was community service - helping the guild's champions through the Implicit Maze.
He reunited with Emmara as they passed through the Dimir and Orzhov gates, with a brief fight against Teysa Karlov of the Orzhov. It was at the Izzet Guildgate that things took a turn for the worse. Ral Zarek was waiting for them, where he revealed to Emmara that Jace was a Planeswalker.
Feeling betrayed, Emmara abandoned him and went through the gate with🧔out him. 💮Ral Zarek refused to let Jace through as the two fought, and he almost killed Jace — who barely survived thanks to an illusion to distract Ral Zarek enough to escape.
Jace reached the end of the maze, where all those inside were already fighting — the flames fanned by Lazav. The bailiff gave every maze runner the ability to activate the Supreme Verdict. To prevent them, Jace connected into all of their minds, draining his own in the process. The bailiff assisted in the spell, allowing Jace to stay sane. This culminated in Jace being named the Living Guildpact, acting as a mediator between all ten guilds.
In the aftermath, Emmara and Jace met again, and she thanked him for his help. However, she requested that he erase her knowledge of other Planes and Planeswalkers, something he agreed to. He continued traveling on and off-Plane, protecting Ravnica from t๊he t💙hreats endangering them.
The Gatewatch
Jace then met the Planeswalker Gideon Jura, who had suddenly appeared on Ravnica. Gideon had discovered that the Eldrazi threat was incoming. He sought Jace out for assistance, as he had discovered the workings of the hedrons and leylines of the Plane. Jace agreed to help, and they traveled to the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Eye Of Ugin, where the leylines interconnected.
They were attacked by a group of Ulamog worshipers but were able to defeat them, despite almost being destroyed. They escaped and split up, with Jace going to the Eye Of Ugin and Gideon traveling to the Sea Gate to prepare the defense against the Eld💞razi Ti꧅tan.
Upon arrival, Jace came across the spirit dragon Ugin, himself in the process of rebuilding the chamber. Ugin told Jace that the leylines could make them immobile, though Jace also saw it as a way to destroy them. Ugin warneဣd against doi🍒ng this, and Jace left the Eye to return to Gideon.
Jace regrouped with Gideon, with the Zendikar native Planeswalker Nissa joining the fight. They were successful in trapping Ulamog within a group of hedrons, but were stopped by Ob Nixilis stepping inside instead to regain his Planeswalker spark. As an act of revenge, Ob Nixilis summoned the other Eldrazi Titan Kozilek to attack them. In the chaos, Ob Nixilis captured all of them and tortured them. They were saved by the arrival of Chandra, who forced Ob Nixilis to flee.
It was then the four Planeswalkers decided to form the Gatewatch, a group of Planeswalkers who vowed to protect the Multiverse. Jace's oath was the cadence "for the sake of the Multiverse, I will keep watch."
Together, they were able to defeat the Eldrazi Titans. Though he had promised Ugin to keep them alive, he knew he wouldn't be able to do so. By using the power of the leylines, they were able to enhance Chandra's pyromancer powers to incinerate and destroy the two Titans, freeing Zendikar from the Eldrazi threat.
The Gatewatch was scolded by Ugin, warning the consequences for killing the Eldrazi could be Mutliverse-altering. He warned that the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Planeswalker Sorin Markov would be much harsher than Ugin was. Jace sought out Sorin on the Plane of Innistrad, wanting to recruit him for the upcoming fight against Nicol Bolas. He crosse🦩d paths with Liliana Vess once again, though she denied his request to him help seek Sorin.
He found his way to Markov manor, discovering Tamiyo's journal, where he studied cryptoliths that were the leylines of Innistrad. The cryptolith also caused madness, something that befell Jace. He traveled back to Liliana's manor, feeling betrayed by the Planeswalker. He attacked her, and Liliana was able to mostly bring Jace back to his senses. However, it reclaimed him as Jace left to go to Thraben to seek out the angel Avacyn.
Once in Thraben, Jace met the Planeswalker Tamiyo, writer of the journal describing the cryptoliths, who cured Jace's cryptolith-induced madness. Avacyn had been driven mad, and Jace and Tamyio went to destroy her. She almost bested the two, being narrowly saved by the arrival of Sorin Markov — who killed Avacyn. With the last protection for Innistrad gone, the last Eldrazi Titan, Emrakul, arrived on the Plane.
Jace assembled the Gatewatch, and they all immediately began to prepare an attack to save Innistrad. Unlike Zendikar, the leylines of Innistrad were not listening, unable to be moved. In the assault against Emraukul, Jace used his powers to protect the minds of the other Gatewatch members from Emrakukl's influence. He worked with Nissa and Tamiyo to entrap Emrakul in the moon of 𝕴Innistrad, succeeding in taking care of ✤the Eldrazi threat.
Tamiyo later confided in Jace that Emrakul had wanted to be sealed in the moon, and the spell used wa♏s actually the second draft. The two were unsure as to why Emrakul wanted her fate.
War Of The Spark
After the Eldrazi problem was taken care of, Jace returned to Ravnica, where the headquarters of the Gatewatch was created. A Planeswalker from Kaladesh arrived by the name of Dovin Baan, wanting to recruit the Gatewatch as protection for their Inventor's Fair event. However, they denied the job, with Liliana saying the Gatewatch was intended for extraplanar threats, not something as simple as that. However, they traveled to Kaladesh after it was revealed that Tezzeret had resurfaced.
There, they met fellow Planeswalker Ajani Goldmane, who joined the Gatewatch. When they confronted Tezzeret, Jace foun൩d his mind unable to be penetrated, so the Pl𝔉aneswalker was prepared for another duel with him.
Jace worked with the Renegades, a group trying to overthrow the corrupt government of the Planes, disguising their ships. They were successful in helping the Renegades with their goal, defeating Tezzeret, who fled. Liliana mentioned that Tezzeret was taking orders from Bolas directly on the Plane of Amonkhet, and Jac🐻e told the Gatewatch they should travel there immediately before he could prepare for their arrival.
Jace and the Gatewatch arrived in the city of Naktamun, where Jace was able to convince them they were natives of the city despite their outsider clothing. They entered a tomb, witnessing the creation of the Anointed, zombies killed in combat and then brought back. He also saw a mural of the demon Razaketh, and Jace learned that 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Liliana had come to kill the demon, not help against Bolas. Jace called her out for betraying his trust, b🦋ut was interrupted when a cleric of the Amonkhet Gods grew suspicious of them and forced them to flee.
They faced Nicol Bolas and his army of Eternals, zombies consisting of fallen Amonkhet warriors and the Gods themselves. Jace attempted to enter Nicol Bolas' mind, failing miserably. He left his own mind open and allowed Nicol Bolas to enter it, nearly killing him and forcing him to planeswalk to safety.
Jace awoke on the Plane of Ixalan, completely devoid of his memories and with a full case of amnesia. He found himself on an island, seeing illusions being created around him. At first, he thought he was losing his mind, but discovered that he was the one creating the illusions, remembering his powers. He set sail and wound up shipwrecked before being saved by the Planeswalker Vraska, who was leading a pirate crew.
Jace joined her crew, and the two began to form a romantic relationship. They traveled to the Golden City, where the Immortal Sun — an artifact Vraska sought — was located. They fell into the water during harsh waves, the trauma causing Jace's memories to return — even those he had eraseဣd from his days o🎃n Vryn.
Upon arrival in the Golden City, they came to a door with an engraved marking of the Azorius symbol from Ravnica. Inside they found, Azor, the parun of the Azorius. Jace entered his mind, seeing that he was planning to entrap Nicol Bolas. On the advice of Vraska, Jace used his status as the Living Guildpact to banish Azor to a remote island, unable to escape as punishment for his meddling in Ixalan's affairs.
Afterward, Jace and Vraska discussed the plans of the Gatewatch and Bolas respectively. In order to protect both himself and Vraska, Jace suppressed Vraska's memory of him to ensure♛ Bolas would not be able to see they had met. It would allow Vraska to betray Bolas once the time was right. Saying goodbye, Jace planeswalked away.
He then briefly went to Dominaria to regroup with the Gatewatch, to try and convince them to return to Ravnica and focus on Bolas. However, he failed, as they insisted on helping to kill the demon Belzenlok on Domiaria instead. Jace 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:tried to recruit Nissa on Zendikar, but failed in that as well.
All of the Planeswalkers would be lured to Ravnica due to the activation of the Interplanar Beacon, and the activation of the Immortal Sun disabled their ability to planeswalk. Jace's position as the Living Guildpact came to a close, due to the arrival of the Planar Bridge that allowed interplanar traveജl for non-Planeswalkers disrupting the leylines that empowered the spell.
The Planeswalkers grouped together and planned an offensive. They split off into different teams, each with its own goals. Jace joined with Jaya, Teferi, and Vivien as the group intended to kill Liliana, who was working under Bolas. Though he still cared for Liliana, he knew it was what needed to be done. They came close to defeating her before Nicol Bolas intervened and des♕troyed the bu💖ilding they were attacking from.
Jace reunited with Vraska, shocked when he found the mental seal he placed in her head was already gone. Vraska admitted she had continued to follow Bolas' orders in order to enact revenge, despite knowing it would help Bolas. Jace forgave her, and Vraska began to help the fight against Bolas.
Jace was one of the few to witness Gideon's sacrifice that saved Liliana from death for breaking her contract with Bolas. He prevented Chandra from killing her, telling her what Gideon had done. Liliana turned the Eternals against Bolas, desparking him. Jace called for Ugin, who took Bolas to the Meditation Realm to imprison him there.
Jace used his illusions to keep Ugin hidden, planeswalking away with Bolas after the deactivation of the Immortal Sun. During the aftermath of the War Of The Spark, Jace attended the Planewide Celebration, where he and Vraska shared their first kiss. He attended Gideon's memorial on Theros, where he was prevented from seeing what the new Living Guildpact decreed for those who assisted Bolas but turned sides, Vraska included.
Return To Zendikar
On Ravnica, Jace was visited by Nissa, who was seeking help from Jace to protect the nature of Zendikar from the Kor Planeswalker Nahiri, who was trying to revive the Mankini Empire by sacrificing nature. However, Jace was more interested in learning more about the artifacts Nahiri was using instead of helping Nissa. She left angrily, and Jace followed, tracking Nahiri to the Murassa Skyclave.
While ascending, Nissa saved Akiri from falling. They were a Kor warrior who acted as their guide to the Singing City, a location Jace f✤igured out Nahiri was traveling to. They split up and Jace 𒈔arrived in the city, where he was almost driven mad by the strange music that was playing there.
He blocked the sounds with a magic seal, doing the same for Nahiri. She told Jace about a Zendikar without the roil allowing for grand cities to be built, something that reminded him of Ravnica. Jace agreed to help Nahiri, on the condition he would be able to study the artifacts before their use.
They came across Nissa, where she felt Jace had betrayed her. She sent elementals to attack Jace and Nahiri, forcing them to retreat. Jace tried to convince Nahiri to come back to Ravnica with him, but she refused and tried to cut him out entirely. Using mental magic, he assumed control of Nahiri's mind and took the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Lithoform Core — the artifact they all were seeking. He briefly took it to Nissa to tell her that he planned to study it in Ravnica, but it was taken by Nissa's elemental, Ashaya, who in turn gave it to Nissa.
Nissa was successful in using the Lithoform Core to restore nature to Zendikar. The Singing City was completely leveled as nature began to return, with Zendikar healing from the destruction the Eldrazi left in their wake. Jace hoped he could restore Nissa's trust for his betrayal, and planeswalked away.
Fighting New Phyrexia
After the discovery of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:New Phyrexian Praetors on other Planes, Jace and the rest of the Gatewatch were alerted. He returned to Ravnica with the knowledge of the looming New Phyrexian threat, uniting the Ravnica guilds and lobbying them for support. He al💖so madeඣ contact with other Planeswalkers to help recruit them for the fight.
Though it is unknown how he received the news, the Planeswalker Koth — a Mirran from Mirrodin, the plane that later became New Phyrexia — was working with fellow Mirrans ready to form an assault on the core of New Phyrexia. Together, he traveled with a group of Planeswalkers di꧅rectly to New Phyrexia in hopes of defeating them be🐷fore they could infiltrate any more Planes.
They came with the Sylex, a device capable of destroying the Plane and the Realmbreaker - a tree that could grow across planꦦes that New Phyrexia would use to invade the Multiverse.
When the strike team arrived, however, they were all split up, as their plan was already known by Phyrexia. Some of them were able to regroup at the base camp of the Mirran resistance, where they met up with Koth and his forces. While they were planning their next step of action, Jace felt Vraska, who had been separated upon arrival calling out for help.
Jace immediately went to Vraska, despite protests from the others. Since Jace held the Sylex, they were forced to follow him. This led them to Sheoldred's Colosseum, where they discovered Vraska, who was already infected with phyresis - the start of Phyrexian corruption. Jace, wanting to comfort her, created an illusion of their life on Ravn🔴ica to enjoy before phyresis fully claimed her mind.
While sharing a kiss, Jace was suddenly stabbed by Vraska, trapping him as she infected him with phyresis as well.
Jace managed to escape from Vraska's clutches, thanks to the sacrifice of the planeswalker Nahiri. Devastated at the fate of Vraska, the strike team continued on their mission and arrived at the Realmbreaker.
Jace's body was starting to become more robotic, as his compleation began to progress, but he was able to maintain himself mentally. Before Jace could activate the Sylex, the Planeswalker Kaya saw that the Realmbreaker could enter the Blind Eternities, the gap between planes, and♉ if they aꦫctivated the Sylex, many innocent Planes could be destroyed alongside New Phyrexia.
Kaya tried to stop Jace, but Jace deemed the sacrifice worth it to prevent Phyrexia from invading the Multiverse. He used illusions to prevent anyone from stopping him as he activated the Sylex, pouring all the emotion and grief he felt into it. Before the Sylex could go off, he was interrupted by Elspeth, who stabbed Jace in the heart wi🃏th her Halo-infused ꦓsword Luxior, before taking the Sylex and disappearing with it.
Despite being stabbed, Jace's body arose as the phyresis finished its work, turning Jace into a Phyrexian as he was compleated. He joined Elesh Norn as she activated the Realmbreaker, and the Phyrexian invasion of the Multiverse began.
