Liliana Vess is one of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Magic The Gathering's oldest modern Planeswalkers, a member of what is known as the Lorwyn Five, a collection of the first five Planeswalker cards ever released. Liliana Vess has appeared in a large number of cards and Planes, being one of the most important characters in the Multiverse. She has been at the center of multiple conflicts as a hero and a vill🃏ain.
Liliana has gone by different names and made contracts with different demons and deities. She is a necromancer primarily aligned with black mana and has never been seen with any other color ⛦within 💯her.
Early Life And Spark
Liliana was 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:born on the Plane Dominaria and resided in the Benalia region with her father and brother Josu. There, she was a healer and a part of Forward Order, a group of clerics in the region. She studied under a woman named Ana. Though she studied healing magic, Liliana also became fascinated with necromancy and how it could help her in her healing.
Tragedy would strike, and Josu was poisoned by his father's enemies. To cure him, Liliana was tasked with gathering the root of an Esis Tree, which Ana said would hold the cure for Josu. However, by the time Liliana arrived at the tree, it had already been destroyed. A man reveals himself and tells Liliana of an alternate cure that could save her brother. This man was the Raven Man, who would haunt Liliana for years to come.
Liliana returned with the alternate cure and gave it to Josu despite protests from her mentor. While this cured Josu from the poison, it cursed Josu into a zombie, and he began attacking everyone in the room. Heartbroken, Liliana fought back against him, promising to find a cure. Josu relentlessly attacked her, forcing her to fight back by reviving the people Josu had killed into zombies to attack him. The trauma of the event would cause Liliana's Planeswalker spark to ignite, causing her to Planeswalk away from the scene.
Pacts And The Chain Veil
After cursing her brother, Liliana found herself on the Plane of Innistrad. Despite what necromancy had caused, Liliana continued to study it with the liches and vampires of the Pla𒅌ne. She also had a brief encounter with fellow Planeswalker Sorin Markov, who she fought with before he deemed her as not a threat. Liliana perfected her necromancy craft, returning to Dominaria and vowing revenge against the Raven Man for deceiving her.
Liliana met with the dragon Planeswalker Nicol Bolas, who told her about the power he lost in the Mending, where all Planeswalkers' powers were significantly lowered from their God-like status. Bolas offers Liliana a contract with four demons to gain both power and youth, an offer she accepts.
One of the demons that Liliana was contracted to was Kothophed. He ordered her to obtain an artifact named the Chain Veil located on the Plane Shandalar. She succeeded in getting the artifact but ran into the Planeswalker Garruk Wildspeaker, who attacked her. Liliana donned the Chain Veil, which greatly enhanced her power, and used this to curse Garruk. Afterward, she returns to Kothophed and destroys him with the power of the Chain Veil.
Fighting The Eldrazi
Liliana travels to Innistrad to seek Griselbrand, another demon she had a contract with. Garruk had followed her there and attacked, forcing Liliana to summon zombies to fight back against him as she fled. Her search led her to the city of Thraben, seeking the Lunarch Mikaeus Cecani, one 🌺of the only people who could tell her where Griselbrand was.
However, Mikaeus was killed before she could talk with him. She took the corpse and rose him from the dead, getting the answers from him she sought. Grislebrand was locked in the Helvault, a prison she could not 🍃get into. Instead, she crafted a spell on the Helvault that would either destroy it or kill the men of the Cathar Thalia. The plan w♔orked, and it was destroyed, freeing Griselbrand and allowing Liliana to destroy him with the Chain Veil.
After 🉐this, Liliana returned to Shandalar once the Chain Veil began whispering to her in her head. She tried to return the veil, but her body refused to listen to her. With each use of the Chain Veil, she was becoming weaker, damaging herself every time she utilized it. Liliana failed to retu༺rn the Chain Veil, and left Shandalar in defeat.
Liliana returned to Innistrad and retired to her manor there. The Eldrazi had begun invading the Plane, and Liliana began to build up defenses for herself. During this time, the Planeswalker Jace showed up being chased by werewolvesꦦ whom Lilian💦a dispatched with her zombies. He explained he was seeking out Sorin Markov, and Liliana tried to persuade him to reconsider unsuccessfully. While Jace went to Sorin, he would become corrupted with cryptoliths and return to fight Liliana.
The Raven Man shows up and protects her from Jace while trying to convince Liliana to kill him, but she refuses. The two had met briefly on Ravnica, working together and forming romantic feelings towards each other, but ultimately didn't act on them. Jace leaves and leaves Liliana alone until the Eldrazi Titan Emrakul arrives.
Liliana initially thought about leaving the Plane entirely, but her feelings for Jace stopped her from doing so. Instead, she remained and helped in the fight against Emrakul with the Gatewatch and the citizens of Innistrad. While fighting directly with Emrakul, both the Raven Man and the Chain Veil begged her to flee, but instead, she drew from the Chain Veil more to fight back against the Eldrazi Titan. This almost killed Liliana, who came back to consciousness after Emrakul was imprisoned on the moon. After the fight, Liliana joins the Gatewatch, though more to have help for her personal deeds as opposed to joining t💦o protect the Multiverse like the others.
Agent Of Bolas
Liliana's first task on the Gatewatch is traveling to the Plane Kaladesh to combat the Planeswalker Tezzeret and help the Renegades of the Plane take down the corrupt gove🌱rnment there. Although, Liliana told the Gatewatch that they should attack Tezzeret directly instead of helping the Renegades. Liliana tracks down and battles with Tezzeret, besting him. Tezzeret reveals Nicol Bolas is on the Plane Amonkhet. Tezzeret escapes before Liliana can strike him down, and she advises the Gatewatch that they should immediately attack Bolas since Tezzeret, a pawn of Bolas, lived.
Amonkhet also was home to one of the demons she was contracted to, Razaketh. She and the Gatewatch arrived on the Plane and were eventually attacked by Razaketh, a clause in the contract allowing him to control Liliana. The Gatewatc💎h attacks him, causing Liliana to gain control of herself enough to use her powers to kill Razaketh. They were attacked by Nicol Bolas, however, and defeated by him. Bolas spared her life, and she Planeswalked away, knowing that she was indebted to the Dragon.
She returned to Dominaria and was reunited with the Gatewatch, who chastised her over her actions. The only one who remained to help her kill the last demon she was contracted to, Belzenlok, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:was the Planeswalker Gideon Jura. It was on the search she would come face to face with Josu, her brother, once again. With great sadness, she killed him. Jura cursed her as he died, saying the misfortunes of their family were all her fault. She, along with Gideon and the Weatherlight Crew, kills Belzenlok, finally freeing Liliana from her contracts. However, as all of the Planeswalkers leave for Ravnica to engage in the final fight with Nicol Bolas, she finds herself in front of🏅 Bolas. He explained that by killing the de😼mons, the contracts defaulted to him and that if Liliana disobeyed him, the pact would be broken and kill her.
Liliana was forced to act as the general of the Dreadhorde and Eternals; an168澳洲幸运5开奖网: undead army created out of the dead on Amonhket, including the fallen Gods of the Plane. Though she led them and was forced to obey Boals at the threat of death, she ensured they would do the leas🎐t amount of destruction 🐼they could without disobeying Bolas.
Gideon tries to attack Liliana to kill her but fails in doing so. Nicol Bolas orders Liliana to send the God-Eternals Oketra and Bontu to kill the Planeswalkers. However, Liliana decides to betray Bolas even though it would kill her and sends them to attack Bolas instead. This action began to chip away at Liliana as she began to dissolve for breaking the contract. However, Gideon grabs hold of her and gives his life to save her, dying in her place.
The God-Eternals attack on Bolas was enough distraction for Niv-Mizzet to attack Bolas, weakening him enough for Bontu to claim his Planeswalker spark and all the sparks he claimed. Bolas killed Oketra and the sparks Bontu absorbed caused him to explode. Nicol Bolas is imprisoned and left sparkless while Liliana Planeswalks away and goes into hiding, now wanted for her working with Bolas.
Confronting The Past
After the War Of The Spark, Liliana travels to the Plane Arcavios, home of Strixhaven, a magic school that she attended when she was younger. She was not remembered and therefore taught there under the name Professor Onyx 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:for the Witherbloom campus. While at Strixhaven, Liliana was studying ways to bring Gideon back from the dead, feeling immense guilt over his sacrifice. One of the Elder Dragons of the Plane and Strixhaven's founders Beledros Witherbloom told Liliana to cease searching for ways to revive Gideon, and instead live on to honor the🍃ir memory, s🥀omething Liliana accepts. She stops looking for ways to revive Gideon.
Liliana helps lead the fight against the Oriq, a group of Mage Hunters intent on gaining power by any means necessary. When the Oriq invaded Strixhaven, she and other professors worked together to keep the students safe. Liliana was transported away to the edge of the continent by the leader of the Oriq Extus Narr, who would be defeated in her absence. After these events, Strixhaven offers๊ Liliana a permanent teaching positioඣn that she accepts. She abandons the Professor Onyx title, going by her real name once again.
While teaching, Liliana is continuously harassed by the Raven Man, beckoning her back home to Dominaria. She learns of his real identity through a book in the Biblioplex on Strixhaven. The Raven Man is Lim-Dûl, an old Dominarian necromancer whose essence was put into the Ring of Mairsil. While confronting the Raven Man, she is attacked by Phyrexians but manages to hold them back. She takes the ring and hides it within her estate on Dominaria to preve൩nt the Phyrexians from gaining access to it. Afterward, she returns to Arcavios to recover from the fight, with new knowledge about the Raven Man in her mind.
