T🎃his is a loaded question, and I’m not sure if there is any single factor that can be determined as the reason for Midnight Sun’s failure. When it was first revealed, excitement for the game was palpable. MCU fatigue was yet to kick in, and a superhero title eager to focus more on relationships among our favourite heroes more than saving the world from yet another predictable threat immediately drew us in. Not to say that Midnight Suns didn’t have compelling villains for us to fight, but outside of combat this game is all about being best f🐼riends with Blade and Spider-Man. You might even smooch one of ‘em.

Somewhere, this excitement began to subside. Firaxis announced that combat focused on using cards each with their own distinct skills and abilities, instead of providing them in a lဣist or menu like you’d s💦ee in other strategy games. This rubbed people the wrong way. Perhaps there was a subconscious relationship between cards and mobile games designed to nickel and dime us, so naturally, players were skittish. In reality, though, cards were an aesthetic choice more than a mechanical one, and you can still engage with Midnight Suns like a superhero XCOM if you want to. But this didn’t help, and neither did its many delays.

Originally set to launch in early 2022, the game was delayed to the following year with no explanation, before finally breaking cover out of nowhere in December with little in the way of marketing or fanfare. The Game Awards swallowed up most of its pre-release hype, while all the year's biggest blockbusters were receiving renewed attention as we slowly approached the festive season.

There wasn&ꦯrsquo;t room for an extensive strategy RPG with deep combat and social mechanics, especially one that asked us to uproot our expectations for superheroes in a genre which so commonly plays towards the lowest common denominator. It’s also mechanically reminiscent of these beloved RPGs thanks to its mixture of turn-based battles and in-depth social mechanics. How you p💫erform as superheroes is as impoꦅrtant as how you operate within The Abbey, a hub area of sorts where everyone hangs out before getting to know one another.

As The Hunter, an original character of your own making, a🐓sked to save the world, you can befriend whoever you like, going down intense, complicated, and emotional character arcs which are equal parts dramatic and mundane. There is something so cool about hanging out with Spider-Man, delving deeper into his personality beyond a tendency to 𝐆save innocent people and defeat bad guys.

Blade, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Wolverine, Scarlet Witch, Ghost Rider, and so many other heroes are afforded similar attention, to the point where the most fun you can have within an action-packed superhero game like this is sitting down to have a chat. Because you begin to care, and progressing relationships are the undeniable highlight and welcome respite after an onslaught of tough battles amidst the main narrative. Much like Persona, I also tr🙈ied to treat Midnight Suns as a game I could chip away at over a number of mജonths, knowing that there was no rush to see it through to the end. But maybe this was one of its biggest problems.

Will We Ever Get Another Superhero Game Like Marvel’s Midnight Suns?

Marvel’s Midnight Suns arrived during a strange time for superhero media, especially in the world of video games.
