Which, in today’s world, is more than enough, even if the gameplay at its core isn’t quite as satisfying.
The second you glimpse the main menu, it’s clear that NetEase has taken Overwatch and given it a Marvel makeover.♛ Menus are similarly laid out, the heroes are viewed and altered in the exact same fashion, and you drop into games where the object is to protect a point or push a payload as you do battle on one of two teams of six players. Yes, it plays from a third-person perspective, but everything else — from its hero abilities to its map design to its lovely cosmetics — is a dead ringer for Overwatch. Except Marvel Rivals takes those familiar tropes and makes them feel so much more modern.
Marvel Rivals Has No Right To Look This Damn Good
Now I’ve only played a handful of games so far, so everything I say in this article is based on first impressions, rather than a comprehensive dive into how Marvel Rivals compares to other games in a mechanical sense. But after playing as 🤪a handful of different heroes and winning a game or two, Marvel Rivals appears to be paced and designed in a way that apes Overwatch while understanding the ways in which it falls short in the current climate.
When it first launched in 2016, Overwatch 🍰was the biggest hero shooter on the planet. It had millions of players and regular seasonal events, new heroes, and updates that kept us firmly on the edge of our seats. Its loot box approach to cosmetic rewards was also fresh, and had no troub🎃le influencing the entire medium years before battle passes took over. Overwatch is charming, gorgeous, diverse, and unique - all factors it maintains to this day, but in the years since, competitors have been able to study its success and replicate its strongest qualities.
Marvel Rivals Could Be The Overwatch Replacement Many Are Waiting For
The first thing that struck me - and many others - was the presentation. It’s similar to how the Spider-Verse movies rejuvenated the cinematic world after years of MCU fatigue. Even when browsing characters in the main menu, you will see their port🍎raits burst out of their icons with animated flourishes, making it clear that everything in this game has an attitude. Give them a click and you can browse similarly impactful skins, highli🍌ght intros, and other unlockables. All of which are beautifully animated and much higher quality than what Overwatch is putting out these days. That contrast is fueling so many of the viral reactions to Rivals.
People are actively looking for an Overwatch replacement right now. Many are still clinging to Blizzard’s hero shoo🅷ter because it means so much to them, but if Marvel Rivals sticks the landing, it could change everything. While playing Rivals, I’m reminded of Overwatch at every turn, but there is enough original thought that the often sh💟ameless copycatting is easy to forgive. Play of the Games are replaced by a generic MVP moniker, while you are able to analyse individual stats, level up each hero, and earn levels in seasonal battle passes while completing myriad other challenges. There is just more to care about in a moment-to-moment capacity here, something that Overwatch sorely lacks now.
When you jump into a match, that infectious style remains untouched. Each map is a great twist on existing settings and tropes, while the opening and conclusion of each match isn’t defined by a simple screen of text, but a bespoke animation that blends with the 🌳aesthetic. While I’ve only played as a couple of heroes so far, I’m already seeing parallels to the likes of Lucio, Mercy, D.Va, Soldier 76 and Pharah, but there is enough setting them apart to not only keep me interested, but make me want to learn a new game in place of Overwatch. And it’s the first time that has happened in year🌺s.
