I know we’re all excited for Mass Effect and Dragon Age, but whe♉n is the real sequel going to emerge? Yes, I’m talking about Jade Empire 2.
Our own Stacey Henley has already gone into great detail about theꦕ recent round of teases that emerge☂d earlier this week to celebrate N7 Day, including the presence of the Geth ♈and Angara, which bring to the surface some very interesting questions about which original trilogy ending is being treated as canon. features a potentially familiar face - it’s hard to tell when they’re wearing a helmet and a sick coat - but my money is on Liara. They’re either marching towards the entrance corridor of a ship or the surface of a planet before drawing a pistol and readying for combat. The sights, sounds, and atmosphere are classic Mass Effect, lined with an aura of galactic mystery that gives me goosebumps. .
Aside from piecing together the scraps of information ourselves, we know nothing official about Mass Effect, beyond the fact that it’s in development and probably won’t see the light of day for years. We know this, and so does BioWare, who has settled into a comfortable pace of annual teasers that don’t overpromise or underdeliver. There is just enough to keep 💎us hooked, and things feel less hollow this time around because we know how much ground BioWare now needs to make up. Andromeda was a failure. Anthem was a failure. And you can hardly gauge what’s to come with a remastered collection like Mass Effect: Legendary Edition.
Aside from Dragon Age 4, this will be one of the first titles where BioWare will have a chance to prove itself to a new generation. Most of the developers who pieced the original trilogy together aren’t even at the company anymore, and Andromeda was an attempt to begin a new journey within its universe without the baggage of what came before. But it was also understaffed and made with a lower budget, so even when you put aside all the flaws, it never really ha꧋d a chance.
A duo of high profile failures has seemingly humbled BioWare and Electronic Arts as they pivot back to story-driven single player experiences that understand the need to provide a compelling cast of characters and narratives worth caring about. Multiplayer doesn’t have much of a place, while live service elements only serve to drag its library down in hopes of additional profits. Those rarely materialise, and that risk isn’t worth the millions of fans you alienae due to a failed product. Lots of people worked hard on Andromeda and Anthem, they were just given an impossible task that could only ever have resulted in a mediocre experience. Dragon Age 4 and the next Mass Effect could change that, and the confidence in♓ which they’re being teased already has me convinced that they will.
I don’t mind looking over posters and teaser trailers for a few more years, it sure beats a landscape shot of Elder Scrolls 6 or the distant promise of The Witcher 4. While the game is far, far away still, to have something tangible to speculate upon has already turned the next Mass Effect into something worth caring about.
