Sora is the final fighter for 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Super Smash Bros Ultimate. That’s amazing news - I wrote as much myself - but now the downloadable content pipeline for the crossover brawler has finally reached the finish line, it’s impossible not to look back and think of what could have been. Waluigi, Amaterasu, Lara Croft, John C🌊ena; these were all possible newcomers to the world of Smash Bros, especially that last one.

Yet there’s one character who rises above the rest as a potential combatant, and that’s Halo’s Master Chief. Alongside Sora, Spartan-117 was heavily rumoured in the months leading up to the JRPG protagonist’s reveal and at times seemed like a real possibility. We’d already seen 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Microsoft properties like Banjo-Kazooie and Minecraft make an ap🦩pearance, alongside Xbox exclusives like Ori and the Blind Forest ported to the Nintendo Switch like it was the most normal thing in the wꦐorld. The relationship was there, so I imagine only a few extra steps needed to be taken in order to make Chief’s Smash appearance a reality.

Alas, it wasn’t meant to be, which is a massive shame because the space marine would have been so perfect for the final spot. He would have been divisive, hailing from a shooter franchise on a rival platform who has minimal history in the world of Nintendo, but the same can be said of Sora. Kingdom Hearts is a PlayStation franchise first and foremost, having only come to other console families in recent years with the exception of a few spin-offs. He isn't a pureblood Nintendo character, and people were annoyed because of it, but he went down so well because we had been waiting so, so long for him to make an appearance.

Legal differences between Square Enix, Disney, and Nintendo had us doubting it would ever become a reality, but somehow an agreement was made and the spiky-haired twink made his way to the final destination. Funnily enough, I imagine the road to enabling Master Chief’s aඣppearance in Super Smash Bros Ultimate as a playable charact♐er would have been a whole lot easier. So long as Phil Spencer was down for it they could have gone ahead, with Steve Downes providing voice lines and 343 Industries helping to ensure that the world of Halo felt strikingly accurate, right down to the goosebump-inducing musical sting that hits you at the main menu. Maybe we’ll see him show up one day, which would be so wonderful given how ideal Chief is for the crossover fighter. We’ve already had a Halo Spartan in Dead or Alive.

In many ways, Nintendo has broken boundaries with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, having worked alongside an endless list of publishers and developers to incorporate characters, music, stages, references, and so much more into a game with limitless potential. It should have been impossible, but the sheer passion of Masahiro Sakurai and his team helped make it all happen, with fans cheering him on from the sidelines alongside each new reveal. Sure, some of them weren’t too jazzed about Byleth, but you can&rs🌠quo;t have everything.

Master Chief is the epitome of this message, a declaration that even the biggest exclusives of rival platforms were welcome to come and play in the realm of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The game has such a scattered variety of characters that together they simply shouldn’t work at all, but Nintendo has created a distinct yet faithful visual aesthetic which guarantees that everyone belon⛦gs, and I imagine the same sense of love would have been poured into Halo’s potential arrival, and it’s a shame we’ll never see it come to fruition. The barriers between platforms are growing more and more transparent, with Sony being the obvious outlier when it comes to working with partners and allowing for more experimental projects outside of its usual wheelhouse. Besides, it tried its hand at Smash before with Play𝕴Station All-Stars Battle Royale and we all know how well that went.

Everyone is here! Except Master Chief, and I’l🍰l always find myself thinking of what could have been. Thanks for all of the memories, Sakurai. Now please - go get some rest.
