The Ashot comes highly recommended against human combatants. The single shell that it fires has enough force to knock a gunman down and keep him down. It's also a bit more accurate than any other shotgun variant in the game.

But we can't recommend this weapon against mutants, simply because the constant need to reload after every shot makes you vulnerable. Against humans, you can find cover. Against an onslaught of rampaging mutant creatures, you're just a sitting duck.

9 Duplet

If you want a real shotgun, the Duplet is your best bet. Just like the name implies, it's a double-barrel weapon that has a wide spread. It's perfect for clearing tight corners firing from the hip, and up close it's absolutely devastating. To maximize the full effect of this weapon, try to close the gap between you and your enemies.

The major drawback, much like the Ashot before it, is the limitation on its ammo capacity, as it's only able to fire two rounds before reloading. This is expected for a double-barrel shotgun, so just be strategic with your shots.

8 Shambler

What would you get if a six-shot revolver and a tactical shotgun had a baby? Well, it'd definitely be the Shambler. This weapon is a shotgun with a rotating chamber of six rounds, effectively making it semi-automatic.

It doesn't take an expert to understand why the Shambler is a highly coveted weapon in the world of Metro. It does plenty of damage at close range and gives you the longevity you need to clear a room before needing a reload. Just remember, though. There are six shells, meaning that the eventual reload takes even longer than the Duplet.

7 Abzats

The Abzats is fully automatic. So, you can get trigger-happy to your heart's delight should the occasion call for it. But keep in mind that you are firing 12-gauge buckshot in quick succession, meaning that the recoil and, subsequently, the accuracy of this weapon are a tad painful.

6 Helsing

The Helsing acts as a combination of a revolver, an air rifle, and crossbow. The gun fires six arrows, or rods. Because this gun is rather quiet, it's perfect for stealth takedowns.

The real upside to this weapon is that your ammo can be recovered after being fired and reused, making the Helsing the gift that keeps on giving. The only negative of this weapon is its firing distance. Don't go thinking you can snipe enemies, as the further the target, the more you'll need to account for a curving drop in the fired arrow.

5 RPK

The RPK is an automatic machine gun. That's right, there are no fancy tricks with this one. The RPK is an ordinary weapon - not something cooked up by the underground dwellers of the Metro.

The obvious positive here is that the RPK has a high ammo capacity, with magazines capable of holding anywhere from 45 rounds to 100 rounds w♈ith upgrades. The RPK is highly effective against mutants that necessitate rapid, heavy-hitting firepower.

At some point, you're going to want to bring out the big guns to take out multiple enemies simultaneously. The Medved will get the job done. It's a grenade launcher that has three rotating chambers capable of firing contact-detonating grenades long-range.

This becomes most effective in firefights with other humans, particularly those outfitted with armor. It doesn't get much better than grenades. The splash damage will also enable you to damage or eliminate enemies behind cover or at different angles. The major drawback is that there is no aiming mechanism like a sight or trajectory cue to assist you. So, you'll have to go entirely by feel and your own experience using it.

1 Gatling

The Gatling gun really needs no introduction. It's exactly what you might expect, a massive machine gun capable of heavy barrages of fire. It's the weapon you need to absolutely mow down the opposition.

As the weapon contains rotating barrels, you'll need to afford the gun a moment to wind up before it begins unleashing a steady stream of bullets. The gun is capable of firing 500 rounds without reloading. Though, the weapon loses accuracy the longer you hold down the trigger. Keep the barrels spinning and fire in short bursts. The only real problem with the Gatling is that it's a one-and-done ordeal. There's no ammo to be found for this weapon. Once it's empty, you must, sadly, move on.
