For as long as there♑ have been video games, there have been players who wanted to get a little more serious than the rest. The elite, the pros, the 360 no scopers. These are the players who went above and beyond, challenging themselves to succeed in all kinds of feats, for no real reward other than bragging rights.

Along the way, developers tried to cater to these people by throwing in certain challenges. There’s usually slim-to-bupkus-reward for completing them, but if they’re added, people will attempt them. Just because they can. Which brings us to achievements. If you’re an achievem🦩ent hunter, you’d better read on because the game could be about to be changed on you forever.

For Xbox owners, Gamerscore is what you make of it. As with the PlayStation equivalent, the overall rep of your account doesn’t directly affect anything within the games you’re playing. You could quite happily ignore it entirely. Or, you could go full tryhard, and insist on nothing less t🎃han 100 percenting the achievement list of every game you own. If the latter is you, then you’re going to be all over the Career system that Microsoft is trialing.

Xbox Career System

Earlier this week, reported that they saw evidence of some new functionality in development for Xbox. It’s in its early stages, but everything points to a Career system which will make the whole concept of Gamerscore more involved. It appears that players will be able to level up and even gain Call of Duty-style prestige. From what we can tell so far, ach👍ievements (and general dedication in terms of playtime) will𝐆 contribute to this, serving as XP that will level up your account.

As adds, loot boxes for your avatar (those being another established Xbox system that is getting an overhaul) also look set to be a part of this, what with༒ loot boxes being absolutely mandatory everywhere these days (those these ones may not be purchasable with real money, supposedly). Quests, we hear, will be another source of experience; furthering the whole idea of the Career system as a means of tying your game collection together and serving as a game-outside-of-the-games sort of thing.

As great as all of this sounds, it’s important to remember that there’s no official word on the Career system yet. The stirrings are undeniable, but as far as when, where, and what exactly, it’s too soon to say. One thing we can say for sure is that last August, Xbox platform Vice president announced that his team was “working towards a bigger, more meaningful change about somebody's gaming accomplishments in history, as a gamer on Xbox." This would certainly be that.
