Never underestimate the media literacy of ൲modern audiences. The prevailing message of Into and Across The Spider-Verse was that anyone can wear the mask, inhabiting the identity of the beloved superhero and taking control of their destinies regardless of who they are or where they’ve come from. It’s a powerful mantra, and one that applies from everything to Black teenagers to giant din﷽osaurs to sentient motocross vehicles. But some, apparently, didn’t get the message.
168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Spider-Man 2 creative director Bryan Intihar confirmed shortly after the game’s release that Miles🅺 Morales will act as Insomniac’s prꦬimary webhead moving forward. Peter Parker takes a backseat to focus on his career and relationship with Mary-Jane, with the game ending with Peter’s retirement. If Peter was holding a torch he would have passed it. Miles swings off into the city to fight crime as Peter gets on with his everyday life, knowing he has done everything he can to prepare Miles for vil♐lains that await. He’ll still be a part of future games, and almost certainly playable in some way, but this franchise has long moved beyond the need to rely on a single version of the hero.
With Wolverine set to take place in the same universe, it sure feels like Sony is now 🅷building its own, far more focused version of the MCU.
Not to mention Silk, an underrated iteration of the hero who is most𓆉 likely being introduced as a pl🌺ayable character set to be introduced in either Spider-Man 3, or their own title much like Miles Morales was a few years ago. Insomniac has always had plans to move beyond Peter Parker, and so we shouldn’t be surprised, but a handful of internet loudmouths view this progression as 168澳洲幸运5开奖🀅网:an unnecessary move fuelled by a woke agenda. Insomniac’s Spider-Man has always been highly diverse, not just through the obvious focus on Miles himself, but the way Miles is used to explore Black culture in Harlem, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:a Deaf love interest in Hailey, and several queer characters, rela🌼tionships, and murals across the three games.
Anger at maturation and diversity in popular culture is constant, especially in spaces like comic books and video games. Miles is so much more than his race, and people claiming they don’t want to play as ‘the Black Spider-Man’ miss so much of what he has to offer. If that’s the lens they see media through, they miss so much the world has to offer too. Anyone can be Spider-Man, whether they’re a white guy, a big talking dinosaur,ꩲ or a helicopter. It shows a gross misunderstanding of Spider-Man as a whole if you draw the line at Spider-Man being a Black teenager.
Peter Parker is the Spider-Man I grew up with, and throughout Spider-Man 2 I had more in common with him as a struggling adult in my 20s, figuring out where my career is set to go and what relationships I should prioritise, than I did with Miles writing his college essay and asking his first girl out. But it’s familiar ground, and pales in the face of Miles’ story no matter the new twists it introduces. Miles has a strong narrative arc about the return of Mister Negative and refusing to indulge his darker traits, while also embracing the importance of balancing his superhero duties with everyday life. These are some of the first big steps Spider-Man takes, an🌊d now we can see Miles form his own rogue gallery of villains without standing in Peter’s shadow as he does everything to fix both their problems.
Miles is a more interesting character to many, certainly a fresher one, and has more potential in a fictional world that takes modern cues from our own, but still people aren’t happy. A complaint I keep seeing is that anyone can be Spider-Man, but Insomniac is limiting its options due to already shackling its future ambitions to Miles. Except it isn’t. Silk is being introduced, not mentioning the introduction of a🎃 fully-fledged Venom gameplay model and the presence of an evolving Spider-Verse within the game’s own. Nothing is limited, and there were no complaints that Insomniac had shackled itself to Peter Parker originally. Miles is here to stay, Peter Parker isn’t going anywhere either, so please get over yourselves.
