If isn't entirely obvious from the headline, here's your warning: this article contains some Across The Spider-Verse spoilers. Mild ones, I won't be going in-depth on massive plot points, but the whole reason I was inspired to write this feature is because of how big a role Spider-Gwen plays in the Spider-Verse sequel.
The central characꦚter Spider-Verse is Miles Morales. However, Gwen is as big a character in Across The Spider-Verse as Miles. In fact, while Into The Spider-Verse introducing us to ꦛMiles, and Beyond The Spider-Verse presumably concluding his story, you might argue the middle movie was more about Gwen than it was about her interdimensional best friend.
Across The Spider-Verse kicks off with an emotional reveal of Spider-Gwen's identity to her father and ends with her finally finding her place in the multiverse, the arc in between taking all sorts of twists and turns that will have cemented Spider-Gwen as a core Marvel character for a lot of people in the process, myself included. Speaking of which, now we're going to be seeing a lot more of Gwen, I should probably figure out what to call her. Spider-Gwen? Spider-Woman? In a kids' show my son watches she's called Ghost-Spider, a show where Miles, for some reason, is called Spin.
Whatever you want to call her, all I ask is that as Gwen continues to get more of the spotlight currently shining on Miles, she is introduced to 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Insomniac's Spider-Verse. Yes, I know I'm getting a little ahead of myself, but give me a break. I'm writing this between my second and third viewings of Across The Spider-Verse and I'm still very excited about it. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Spider-Man 2 is still to come, and then there's 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Wolverine, but if someone high up at Insomniac could run over to the big ideas whiteboard and jot down Spider-Gwen right under those two projects, I'd really appreciate it.
I don't know what's going on over there at Insomniac, but I have every faith the studio could get the job done, and pretty quickly too. Spider-Gwen's first game doesn't need to be something on the scale of Spider-Man 2. It would be more fitting for it to be the same as 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Miles Morales in scope. A proper introduction to the hero in which her place in the series is explained and established while showcasing the character and how she and her powers are unique from the other two spider-people. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Spider-Man and Miles Morales were two years apart with development on the fantastic 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart slipped in for good measure. I know you can work magic, Insomniac, I've seen it.
If Insomniac has plans to keep expanding the universe in which Peter and Miles reside, then Gwen is the logical next step. In fact, I'd argue Gwen is the only logical option, but there are, perhaps somewhat worrying signs the studio might have other plans. Avengers Tower has been in the games since the very start and Spidey has even referenced Earth's mightiest heroes, confirming they exist somewhere in that world. Not to mention Wolverine which will likely take place in the same universe.
As much as I don't think Insomniac would fall foul of the same mistakes 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Crystal Dynamics and 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Square Enix made with its own Avengers game, I would much rather see an expanded Spider-Verse with the next character introduced being Spider-Gwen. Three heroes who already have a strong connection to one another in other media, particularly the new movies, right as the newer versions of Spidey are more popular than ever. Synergy and timing is key here, an area in which Marvel's Avengers repeatedly missed the mark.
Miles has already given so many people a hero they can see themselves in that wasn't there before, Gwen can do that for an entirely different group of fans. Not only women and young girls, but trans people too. There's a popular headcanon that 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Gwen might be trans, but even if she's not, why does it bother you if it makes someone feel better to think that she is? Or at the very least experience her story in a way that might be reflective of that?
Looking way off into the future, after my wish for a Spider-Gwen spinoff game has naturally been granted (because why wouldn't it be?), just imagine what Spider-Man 3 might be. Insomniac recently joked Spider-Man 2 is called Spider-Man 2 not because it's a sequel, but because it has two Spider-Men in it. Surely if there's going to be a Spider-Man 3, it needs to have three web-slingers, so make that third Spidey Gwen.
