The Minecraft Movie is in trouble after its director bows out, also tanking its planned reꦆleas♕e date.
You already know Minecraft, the building slash survival game where you take control of cubist characters to try to survive the killer wildlife of a geometric world. You probably also know that it’s currently owned by Microsoft after the f🐼ormer owner s🦩old it for millions upon millions of dollars.
And you might even know there are plen🐓ty of fan creations, mods, and even a spinof🔴f Telltale game that tells a pretty good story if we do say so ourselves.
But unless you were paying attention, you might not already know that there’s a Minecraft movie in the works. Work began with Warner Bros. back in 2014, and it’s been a rocky 🦄road since then.

The original director, Shawn Levy (of Night in the Museum and Stranger Things fame) decided this particular project wasn’t for him, so the torch was passed to Rob McElhenney--y’know, the guy who played Mac in Always Sunny in Philadelphia? Warner Bros. also brought on Jason Fuchs as co-writer, and the two were set to bang out a corporate video game movie a la Rampage.
Something must have gone horribly wrong since according to , Rob McElhenney and Fuဣchs are both out. We’ve got no word on why the director and writers are both stepping aside: maybe they couldn’t make anything that was any good? Maybe Warner Bros. didn’t pay them enough giant bags of money? Or maybe they just got a better offer to make some other video game movie? Either way you slice it, they’re gone, and so is the movie’s May 24th release date.
To help fix this train wreck, Warner Bros. has hired Aaron and Adam Nee, the writer/director duo who are set to direct the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie, to see what they can do. The most recent movie the two have done before now would be Band of Robbers, which was alright if not spectacular. So feel free to be cautiously optimistic this won’t all turn out to be a steaming hea♉p of excrement.
We hope.
