Every year, the first thing fans do upon booting up MLB The Show is hyper analyze the player ratings. For the most part, MLB The Show has been praised for its accurate player ratings, but that doesn't mean the game is without fault. There are always a select few who are rated too high or not high enough that ruffles the feathers of dedicated players. While some ratings can be splitting hairs, thes🌜e player ratings certainly raise some eyebrows and don't make any sense at all.

10 Clayton Ker💙shaw, Dodgers SP: 95

Clayton Kershaw pitching

Clayton Kershaw has had an unbelievable career. A first-ballot future Hall of Famer and regarded as one of the best pitchers ever to play the game, it seems like Kershaw is deserving of the 95 rating. But looking at his individual pitching categories,♏ Kershaw's highest rating is in stamina (92).

He 💧still possesses a devastating breaking ball (91), but it's clear he's lost a step or two. His control (61) and velocity (63) are abysmal, and the long-time Dodgers pitcher s🥀urrendered a career-high 28 home runs in 2019. Kershaw is still a dangerous pitcher by all accounts, but his 95 rating might be more reflective of his entire career versus the kind of pitcher he is today.

9 🌸 Max Scherzer, Nationals SP: 94

Max Scherzer pitching

Similar to Kershaw, Max Scherzer's remarkable career might've contributed to his overall rating to boost up a few points. Although b♌eing a 94, the Washington Nationals pitcher's highest rating is hits allowed per nine innings (88). His control (65) has fallen quite a bit, but otherwise, Scherzer has average to slightly above-ꦰaverage pitching ratings.

If Scherzer is rated as high as a 94, then his individual pitching categories should be rated higher too. It doesn't make sense that his overall rating is in the mid-90s, y♓et doesn't have a single 90 or above in 𝔉any pitching category.

8 Zack Gre𒊎inke, Astros SP: 90

Zack Greinke pitching

At 37-years-old, Zack Greinke is the oldest player featured here. The Houston Astros pitcher has consistently been a top starting pitcher in the league, and one of the best defensive pitchers too. Greinke's fielding (95) and accuracy (92) are exceptional. While fieldiﷺng needs to be included in a player's overall rating, whatever system the game uses to determine these ratings must value fielding hi🦋ghly.

Greinke's velocity (42) is one of the lowest in the game for a pitcher of his caliber. After finally posting a sub-3.00 ERA in 2019 for the first time in five years, Greinke reverted to serving up runs with a 4.03 ERA last year. U❀ltimately, Greinke's 90 isn't as erroneous as other pitcher ratings, but his fielding shouldn't be as big of a factor as it presumably is.

7 Madiso✱n Bumgarner, Diamondbacks SP: 80

Screenshot of MLB The Show 21

When the Arizona Diamondbacks traded Zack Greinke to the Houston Astros in 2019, fans believed the team was signaling a rebuild. Surprisingly, the Dꦚiamondbacks signed pitcher Madison Bumgarner from the rival San Fr💜ancisco Giants to seemingly be Greinke's replacement. Unfortunately, Bumgarner has looked anything but that.

Since arriving in the desert, Bumgarner has only two wins with a 6.48 ERA in 2020 and an 8.68 ERA currently in 2021. Ne꧑edless to say, Bumgarner has been an utter disappointment. So it's a bit surprising he's rated as high as he is. The only redeeming qualities of the 31-year-old are his stamina (81) and durability (82). His control (61) is all over the place, lost the zip on his fastball (44),ꦿ and gives up hits (67) and homers (60) like they're going out of style. Bumgarner also doesn't have any quirks, which is a bit unusual for a player of his stature but adds to his rapid decline.

6 Jake Cronenworth, Padres 💮2B: 85꧙

Jake Cronenworth fielding

Led by the cover athlete himself, Fernando Tatis Jr. (95), the San Diego Padres a🔜re looking to make some noise in 2021. With so many analysts picking San Diego as a trendy team to make the Worlܫd Series, it seems the hype train has affected some player ratings, namely Jake Cronenworth.

San Diego's second baseman, Cronenworth made his major league debut last season. Only a C potential, Cronenworth's highest individual rating is an 82 in contact hitting against right-handers. That also happens to be his only rating above 🐈an 80. He's a terrible power hitter (56 against right-handers and 39 against left-handers), an average fielder (75) with below-average arm strength (67). The 27-year-old didn't have a bad debut season, hitting .285 with 20 RBI and only three errors in the field, but it also doesn't translate to an 85 rating overall.

5 ⭕ Edwin Diaz🎶, Mets CP: 83

Edwin Diaz pitching

The New York Mets enter 2021 with championship aspirations in mind, and closer Edwin Diaz will be a major part of it. With an A poꦐtential, Diaz is a fireball thrower with a perfect velocity rating (99) and a high strikeout rate (97). In 2018, Diaz collected 57 saves with an ERA of only 1.96. Producing those kinds of n𒊎umbers it's a surprise that Diaz is rated so low. His lowest pitching ratings are an 82 in both pitching clutch and his breaking pitches, so what's the deal?

4 ꧒ Josh Hader, Brewers CP: 85

Josh Hader pitching

There was a brief time when Josh Hader was in the co♕nversation about being the best closer in baseball. Considering Hader's individual pitching category ratings, it's both a surprise that Hader isn't brought up more as bei🔜ng the best closer and why he's only an 85 overall.

The Milwaukee Brewers closer has three 99 perfect ratings in hits allowed per nine innings, strikeouts per nine innings, and his breaking ability. Also, the 26-year-old has a 94 in pitching clutch and an 82 in his velocity. Considering these separate ratings, Hader's overall rating should be much ꩵhigher.

3 𝓡 😼 Charlie Blackmon, Rockies RF: 81

Charlie Blackmon hitting

While most of the attention was on Nolan Arenado during hiꦰs tenure with the Colorado Rockies, Charlie Blackmon quietly established himself as a cornerstone on the team. Ok, maybe not too quietly, as Blackmon is a four-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger award. And that's wh💖at makes his 81 overall rating so puzzling.

Blackmon is the second-rated player on the Rockies, which is correct and understandable, but it's the fact that he's a whole 10 points less than team-best Trevor Story (91) that's the problem. From 2016 to 2019, Blackmon avera🌌ged about 31 home runs per season, but his power-hitting is only 75 against right-handers and 70 against left-handers.

2 Shohei Ohtani, Ang✃els SP/🐠OF: 80

Shohei Ohtani pitching and hitting

Quite possibly the most unique player in baseball, Shohei Ohtani is the game's only true two-way player. Meaning, Ohtani is both a starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels and an outfielder. When Ohtani came from Japan and , it was in the hopes that he would transform the game with his rare set of skill🎃s.

Ohtani's 80 overall rating comes off as being very conservative. While other players have been rated too high based on small sample sizes, it feels like the game doesn't know what to do with Ohtani. Being both a pitcher and positional player, the 26-year-old has good ratings across the board, besides his contact hitt꧟ing against left-handers (51). He has a perfect rating for his breaking ball (99) and extremely high velocity (90). And out in the field, Ohtani has a cannon for an arm (94). With such high ratings and an A potential,🐟 it's perplexing why Ohtani is just an 80, but he should be in line for a big boost down the road.

1 Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Blue Jays 3B: 74 🐲

Vladimir Guerrero Jr hitting

It's borderline criminal how MLB The Show 21 rates Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The 22-year-old third baseman is one of the most dynamic young athletes in the major leagues. Guerrero Jr. appeared in all 60 games last year in the shortened season, hitting .262 with nine home runs and 33 RBI. For some reason MLB The Show 21 has Guerrero Jr. listed as a third baseman when he played exclusively at first baseman in 2020, besides designated hitter. And during this season, he's made 13 starts at first base compared to only one appearan🦩ce at third.

MLB The Show's malfeasance in Vladimir Guerrero Jr.✅'s rat🔯ing must be amended. It's inexplicable that a player of Guerrero Jr.'s stature in both name recognition and the ability to already impact the game would be rated so inaccurately and mislabeled defensively. Make it make sense.
