After more than 18 years, Morrowind is making a triumphant return. OpenMW is a fan-built remaster of the iconic game, and a🐼 shows off a world that's more beautiful than Skyrim.

OpenMW is actually available right now – just head over to its and give it a download. You'll of course need a copy of Morrowind in order to run the game, as "OpenMW is a game engine recreation and only replaces the program." That mean♐s a legal copy of Bethesda's aging title is required to run the fan remaster. Once you've got that all figured out, you're ready to experience Morrowind like never before.

One of the great things about OpenMW is its mod support. This lets fans outside the development team get in on the action and build Morro🔯wind into directions all their own. The latest and greatest showcase of this comes in the form of a new fan trailer – one that's running with over 300 mods. Needless to say, the game looks impressive.

While OpenMW is currently playa🃏ble, it's not yet considered a full release. "There are still a number of issues that need to be addressed before we believe that we have reached parity with the original Morrowind game engine and Construction Set," writes the team. "In particular, many of the new features we are planning for post-1.0 will require a functioning editor so that we can create mods that use them, thus bringing OpenMW-CS to parity is very important." In other words – OpenMW will only get better through the year.

If you want to see what the game looks like without 300+ mods, the OpenMW team  to celebrate the release of version 0.46.0. The update was one of the largest ever for the ಌproject, and it introduced real-time shadows and new AI pathfinding to the game. It doesn’t look quite as good as the fan's version, but it's still a huge step up from base Morrowind.
