With 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath arriving in less than🍬 two weeks, NetherRealm Studios has leaned hard into time travel and alternate reality storylines, far more than they ever have before. Since first releasing in 1992, there have been a total of eighteen games in the series, and so there was bound to be some repetition, re-canonization, and rebooting going on.

Kronika As The Source Of Alternate History

Via: medium.com

Kronika, a Titaness that ranks higher than even the Elder Gods, is the Keeper of Time. The plot of Mortal Kombat 11 centers around the desire to see both her children, Shinnok and Cetrion, equally favored by all the realms. Unfortunately, this means a reality in which there is a constant back and forth, a never-ending conflict of good and evil, and so when Raiden removed Shinnok’s head from his body, th🎉at balance was destroyed.

Reshaping history over and over became Kronika’s only task, finding that while she could manipulate most with her power, Liu Kang and Raiden were the most difficult. We see in the main story of Mortal Kombat 11 that Liu Kang and Raiden have fought countless times before, bringing back “Memories not only from this timeline, but from timelines tha♔t have come before♎.”

Kronika Bringing Fighters From Different Times

For Kronika to advance her timely machinations, she uses her power to bring forth fighters from Mortal Kombat II, good and bad, allowing past and present to coexist in a delicate balance. Inꦅ the story mode, this gives us the entertaining scenes between characters like both Johnny Cages, young Sonya and her future daughter Cassie, and more.

However, it is here that Kronika’s actions can explain the entire Mortal Kombat franchise timeline. According to her, she has restarted and reshaped the timelines so much that every single possibility has alr🐠eady played out. That might have been a slight exaggeration to throw Raiden off, since she ultimately loses, but still accounts for the entire multiverse of scenarios that span the series.

Rebooting, Retelling, Or Is Everything Cannon?

Via: neogaf.com

Past games in the series that retread familiar storylines have been described as retelling or rebooting certain aspects of the main story. This is, according to Ed Boon, the structure of Mortal Kombat 9 (2011), which was as a retelling of the events of Mortal Kombat 1-3. With Kronika and her endless combinations of realities in a Mortal Kombat multiverse, we can simply say that the events of Mortal Kombat 1-3 occurred exactly as they did, and so too did Mortal Kombat 9.

Alternatively, another more pessimistic way of looking at Kronika’s endless reshaping of time is not that a෴ll realities are p﷽ossible, but that none of them are because she continuously restarts to reach her ideal reality.

Messing With Time And Fan Expectations

Whether one considers Kronika and her reshaping of time to be an everything-is-canon or nothing-is-canon situation, fans were quick to show their anger and frustration a🧔t how the character of Sindel was handled as part of the Kombat Pack 1 DLC. In previous entries Sindel was considered a victim to Shao Khan, not only in the take o💧ver of her realm but later in being revived and brainwashed by Quan Chi.

The representation of Sindel was one of a good, kind person, but that was stripped away in an instant with her release in Mortal Kombat 11, as it was revealed that she w𒁏a🤪s an evil mastermind, one who betrayed her husband and willingly allowed Shao Khan to conquer the realm.

Aftermath – Does It Make Everything Meaningless?

Via: store.steampowered.com

Now we are once again entering uncharted territory with the Aftermath expansion on May 26, because while Kronika has been defeated, it is unclear if Liu Kang or anyone will be able to control time. Shang Tsung controls the means by which time can be reshaped thanks to the crown that is hidden on S🐟hang Tsung's island, empowered by the souls he has taken.

However, the outcome of the DLC is a moot point by now. Unless the next 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Mortal Kombat game seeks to continue to address the plot points we are seeing now, any reboot or retelling of the story could simply be considered another of Kronika’s alternate timelines, doomed to fail. Unfortunately, this🗹 unintentionally removes any real stakes from all past games, and potentially more in the future.

Ultimately, players buy into the Mortal Kombat series for the competitive scene and the joy of playing against friends to be one’s best, and the series would survive not having a perfect story. That said, it is certainly not an ideal corner that NetherRealm Studios seems to🦹 have written themselves into.

For now, all we can do is wait and hope that Aftermath addresses these types of concerns in a sati𒁏sfying way.
